AdBlue Newbie

I'm new to this as well. It came on saying it had 600 miles left. I don't recall it telling me how much it wanted so when I filled up at a garage I bought a bottle and just tipped it all in. Have I made a mistake?

If it’s just an empty/low tank, it will request a certain quantity.

If there is an AdBlue error, you’ll get a red or yellow bottle symbol, a loud bleep when you turn on, and 650mile countdown and no quantity for refill.

You can check your AdBlue range on the MFD and if it’s gone up, you’ve got away with it!

Huh, yeah I'm pretty sure that's what it did. This was a couple of thousand miles ago now, though and it's been fine since.

You should get a screen like this if you scroll through the MFD. when full or nearly full, it won’t show a quantity. It’ll only show a quantity when the range drops a bit.

VW do not recommend ‘topping up’. Only add when requested.

You will see loads of people with adblue problems but at same time loads of people saying ignore the display telling you how much to put in and just bang in 10 litres instead! Infer from that what you want!

I put in the max amount it tells me, after filling I put ignition on for 30 seconds as stated in the manual until it resets then I start the engine.. never had an issue.

I waited until it said 1.75-2.25 gallons and then put a 10l bottle in. Think it prefers a big fill in one go which is why it comes in 10l bottles. Didn’t register first time I turned the key but turned the key back then to ignition and it went to >5k .
1 gallon is 4.5 litres as I’m sure we all know. Or ‘a litre of water’s a pint and three quarters’

I will be embarking on a long trip at the end of the month so will add adblu before I leave. Are the tank sizes different or does it work out how much is needed based on driving style, engine size, model etc? I only ask as mine tells me I have 1600 miles but my min and max are different to the photo above, despite me having a longer range.

Min 2.25
Max 2.5

I wouldn’t read too much into the range. It’s an estimate much like your range on the fuel tank which will vary with driving style.

Just fill up an amount between the min and max, switch on the ignition and just leave it switched on for at least 30 secs before you start it.

It should then show in the MFD as an increased range.

Can I ask a really stupid question should/can I use 12 month old Adblue or should I get some fresh?

It does have a lifespan depending on temperature. Here’s what’s on my bottle.

Make sure the container is well sealed and the AdBlue is clean too.

I buy my AdBlue online. Seems to be much cheaper that the local retail offerings.
No pump AdBlue anywhere local.
FindAdBlue.com for useful information and locations of pumps.

Hi
As a newbie, just wondering if anyone uses the adblue additives, like this one.
We don’t do a lot of miles, especially in winter and adblue crystallises after 6 months.
Which could be an issue for us.

Ok - don't shout at me - just telling you what the dealer told me - and I'm sure it is bs, but just in case....
He said, don't get the crap stuff from Halfords or cheap stuff online. Only use VW adblue. I did question him but he was adamant there is a difference. Can't see how or why, except in price.
I live a fair distance from this dealer and they knew I wouldn't be going to them for services etc, so they didn't have anything to gain directly from me even if I did follow their advice and only buy from VW.

Do you think it is bs also?

I believe it’s all made to a standard. I’ve never used VW AdBlue. Always just buy Redex from Costco.
