Audio Upgrade Stage-1 . . . . Blam Relax 200rs Speakers From Skipton.

Did you cut the old tweeter out? Or does it twist out anti-clockwise?
I’m trying to do the same thing, looks like I’ll need to glue the new ones in though!

Did you cut the old tweeter out? Or does it twist out anti-clockwise?
I’m trying to do the same thing, looks like I’ll need to glue the new ones in though!
Just cut off the small plastic tabs holding the old tweeters with a sharp Stanley knife.
I then used a hot melt glue gun to secure the new ones in place.

Speaker died !!!

looks like I've fallen foul of not following my own advice. . .

the drivers speaker stopped working the other week.

the tweeter still worked fine so i knew the radio and amp were all good. . . ( as they are electrically connected together)

so it had to be the speaker or connection.

i finally had a chance to to take the door card off. . . .

this is what i found.

1670663143070.png

we see signs of water / moisture here splitting the MDF speaker rings . . .

1670663187826.png

not looking good here with the speaker bottom showuing evidence of water damage. . . .

1670663222640.png

with more signs of corrosion here . . .

1670663257775.png

the speaker cone was stuck solid . . . so the assumption is that water had go into the speaker and corrosion had stuck it solid.

but why . . .?

well i didnt follow the advice above about fitting the water shield / water guard. . .

or even using a sheet of sound deadening as a shield to prevent the water damage . . .

i suppose I've been lucky that its taken 4 years to effect me. . .

so what now . . . . . we the speakers is knackered.

I've ordered a replacement set of speakers with new rings and water rain guards. . .

untill they get here lets take a look at the speaker to see what happened. - it wasnt what i expected.!!!!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

the cone and spider was stuck fast, so i had to cut them out. . .

1670663573104.png

i was expecting the coil bobbin to be rusted and corroded and stuck fast.

but i wasnt !! - it was clean.

BUT i was stuck?

1670664543770.png

so why was it stuck?

well look at the centre section that the bobin sits over . . . its not centre and pushed over to one side. . .

thats what was holding the speaker firm.

1670664712047.png

but whats caused that?

well stripping the rear motor assembly appart we see this. . . .

1670664773487.png

now we can see whats happened. . .

water from the wet side of the door has run/dripped down from the window rubber into the top of the speaker. . .

this is why you NEED TO FIT A RAIN COVER ON T6 FRONT SPEAKERS.

the water has wicked into the motor assembly and started to rust. . .

the rust has grown and started to push the components appart. . .

even though the magnets are extreamly strong and to break them appart needed great force. . .

the power of mother nature and the rust was no match for this speaker. . .

1670665108919.png

this was the cause for the speaker failure. . .

the centre guide was pushed off centre by the growing rust and eventually pinched the bobbin fast and jammed the whole unit solid.

conclusion - if you dont want to end up with this problem, fit water guards !

1670665381288.png
.

Where does the water/moisture come from ? Is it just weather related internal condensation or is it from rain on the outside ?

i had water in my door at one point and it was from the front edge of where the door meets the glass, the seal butted up to the glass fine until the front inch and it just moved away 1-2mm by the wing mirror just enough to let rain running down the glass get inside the door

rain water from outside. . .

or carwash water etc etc

it gets in from the window runners and seals, its totaly normal,

and as such there are drain holes at the bottom of the door for the water to drain out.

same as last time then . . . :(

we can supply if you wish,

they come with plastic collars now, which is better than the very thin MDF ones,

like in your pics we use sound deadening behind the speaker. Which cures the issue when running the speaker terminals at the top, plus cable going through side of collar instead of running them behind

I did check your website first to order.....

But the online shop wasn't available yet...

I should have called you.

well . . . . they finally arrived - so thank you supplier, but not what i expected.

i was expecting all the component parts. . .

but they have come all assembled ready for fitting. - which is nice?

weve got 8x sheets of sound deadening . . .

1671304722494.png1671304740307.png

one set of tweeters already prepped with the OEM VW connectors on. ( not sure yet what they chose 0db or -3db)

1671304797056.png

then the speaker + mount ring + rain guard + oem wire plug - all pre assembled as one unit ready to go !!!

1671304899025.png

the VW conector is glued through the ring ready for connection at the vw oem point . . .

1671304934753.png

the rain guard extends to the front. . .

1671304960437.png

and most importantly the raer of the speaker c. . . .

1671304994230.png

sweet . . .

1671305012431.png

very nice . . .

1671305035064.png

.

so basically from this point . . . all we need to do is remove the old speakers. ( or OEM speakers )

and replace with this set, using the supplied screws.

a nice surprise?

or would i have preferred to assemble it all myself.?

++++++++++

well currently im ubber busy so having the kit pre-assembled is a good thing.

++++++++++

if i had more time i would have like to assemble myself . . . . but the end result would have been the same . . . . so? (maybe pre-assembled has saved me some time)

+++++++++++

for average Joe, its a good thing as they are just a - remove and refit kit.

++++++++++++

next up will be fitting and testing. . . .

Although my passenger side install went well, on removing the drivers side front door card, the detachable catch for the internal door opener broke, it snapped. I'm not sure what I did differently to make it break, but that's life! I was able to stick the two plastic bits together with some gaffer tape but assuming that is not going to hold, does anyone know a part number or even the correct name for the part? Here it is, there's quite a big bit missing which I later found on the ground :)

IMG_1973.jpg

Here's a similar part although I think this is for T5 rather than T6.
