Barn Door Halogen to Tailgate LED Rear Lights - pinout

Mine was a little different, not sure if the original post has a typo. As mentioned before the halogen units have as single fog (RHS) and Reverse (LHS) so you need to run 2x additional cables above the headlong to connect both sides.

LH Light

1. Grey/Black - Side light
2. Connect to RH Pin 5 (Additional Cable)
3. Black/White - Indicator
4. Brown - Earth
5. Green/Black - Reverse
6. Black/Red - Brake

RH Light

1. Black/Red - Brake
2. Connect to LH Pin 5 (Additional Cable)
3. Brown - Earth
4. Black/Green - Indicator
5. Grey/White - Fog
6. Grey/Red - Side Light

Having just done the additional wiring, I too had to do it this way. I done it the other way first and it was incorrect. 2019 highline kombi so possibly different because of the age difference?

Having two reverse lights is such a treat. Currently using Auxito brand LED lamps and they work a treat.

My advice to anyone planning on doing the same would be to buy the correct pin tool for a few quid. The Allen key approach works fine but definitely mangles the pins slightly.

Thanks for all the thread info.

Whats involved with upgrading the rear lights on a tailgate to the factory led? Has anyone got some before and after pictures of the lights

This might help...you will also have to add resistors to prevent hyper flash on dash.

Did my rear upgrade this weekend (again thanks to the info in the forum). As it seems the pin colours can vary somewhat depending on what you are going from to (standard bulb to LED or LED to LED or tailgate vs barn doors etc etc) I thought I’d share my pin transfer in case it is of any use to anyone.

My starting position was non LED going to 6.1 LED on a MY19 tailgate van so may vary for other models.

Top diagram is the 6.1 LED circuit and bottom is the transposition (I ran additional 2 core so now have fog and reverse on both sides and impressed with how bright they are).

Thanks for the advise so far, my next query is the two bulbs that are on the lights, can they also be replaced with LED and get no errors?

LED reversing lights are common with this light cluster upgrade. I use these ones in my own van and customer vans and they work very well and are very bright. I’m not sure about the indicator bulbs, but it would be interesting to know. I suspect an in line resistor might be required to prevent hyper flashing and bulb out warning on the dash. That’s the case when fitting T6.1 rear lights which already have LED indicators.

Reverse lights as per Chris’ response, and indicator mod can be found in @Robert’s thread here:

All wired in and working now. Although when im indicating they are flashing normally outside but the indicator noise inside is fast like it has a bulb out. I've fitted a W16W canbus indicator bulb so no warning lights. I've seen the required resistor on the sequential led mods thread but its out of stock at moment.

has anyone got the vw part number for the female plug needed to convert to rear leds?

Hi. First rime
Posting so please be kind. I have an 18 plate T6 highline with tailgate. I want to upgrade from non-LED to LED lights from transporter HQ. I’m OK with all the advice on re-wiring. Just need help knowing exactly how to run a two-core cable between the left and right hand connector plugs. Is is better to go under (down behind the bumper) or over (up and around the tailgate interior)?
Many thanks.

I went up and over, just to keep it dry more than anything

Thanks RedUn. That’s what I would prefer to do - for the same reason. Any tips or advice on how to do it? I was hoping it would be a simple case of pushing the cable through to take it up and over but I wonder if that sounds much easier than it is to actually do!

It's fairly simple to do, I took the roof panel down at the rear for access across the top I could wrap it all up nice and neat so it doesn't rattle. In the posts there's harness to fix it too as well.
