Base van choices

I also always use millers ecomax additive. I know alot of people will cry snake oil etc etc....but for its a tiny cost in comparison to a tank of diesel (£1.19 per 70L tank of diesel) its supposed to help with cleaner combustion and keep the internals cleaner I think its worth a go!

Ooh I love snake oil! Always filled with the posh fuel, only do about 7k miles a year, my mind is at peace!

Don't want to sound negative, but it also depends on how the previous owner(s) treated the van. If they only did short journeys, problems may already have been set in motion, regardless of how you use it from now on.

So no concerns over a TDI as long as it gets 2 - 4 runs out a month?
What do you mean by a run? I find it takes about 30mins of out of town motoring before a regen starts properly as everything needs to get up to temperature. If my van has not been used for a while (it’s not a daily and never used for running about town) I will give it a run on my commute which is 30 miles of mostly A road and motorway. It is always, always with about a mile to go it decides to start a regen so I take a detour to let it finish. If one has been interrupted it will show as having started (I monitor with Carista) pretty much straight away but takes much, much longer to complete as it needs the temps to get high enough before it’s regening properly. It’s best to keep the revs over 2000rpm if possible during the regen.

So if your runs are 30-40miles plus of open driving then that is good. However, the other aspect is overall engine wear as a diesel takes a lot longer to get to temperature so your short town runs will be on a cold engine all the time which is far from ideal.

I’m another vote for the 150 as that is what I’ve got. I wouldn’t want less power, but also don’t want the complications of the bi-turbo or need the performance. Mine is a manual but in town I wish it was an automatic as first gear is stupidly short. I pull away in second when possible. I’d suggest driving a few to see what you prefer as everyone has different tastes.

Again, for education purposes, without Carista, how do I know if/ when / regen’s are happening? Mine is euro5 (150) in a t6. Is this all still relevant as no adblue stuff?

I can tell when mine starts a regen by smell and also idling revs increase to around 1000 or just above. If you happen to stop and turn the engine off you’ll hear that the fan carries on running

As icn05 says, the idle will be raised to about 1000rpm and you may smell the burning from the exhaust if you stop at traffic lights etc. It’s easy to miss if you are on the open road though. If the regen is not finished when you switch off the engine the fan will be running for a few minutes after. Happens with Euro 5 as they have a DPF. The advantage you have is no adblue tank to gunk up and give false readings and eventually stop the van starting!
