Well just had cambelt and waterpump changed at my vw centre.
Had aux belt done and full major services well
Here's the good bit , they quoted me £570 for waterpump and cam belt which I thought was a lot so I spoke to an independent garage and got a quote for £410 including Vat and got VW to price match it.
Happy days

Just for comparison, I had the same job done by a main dealer on an Audi Q5 late last year. Audi Tetbury charged me £540 all in but that includes free MOTs for the rest of my ownership of the car (and, by coincidence, it sailed through the first free one yesterday so I've already had £50 back!).)...........they quoted me £570 for waterpump and cam belt which I thought was a lot so I spoke to an independent garage and got a quote for £410 including Vat and got VW to price match it.

Robinsons in norwich but I did need to have written quote from other garage. Robinsons price match with 15 milesThat is very good price as my main dealer what's £358 for major service and £534 for Cambelt and water pump.
Which main dealer did you use ? I may travel up to Norwich to have mine done.

Just had Major service + Full Cambelt and water pump + Auxiliary belt and tensioner all done at Robinsons VW van centre Norwich.
Very good customer service and very very happy with the work done, and best price of any VW van centre given to me.
Even sent me a video to my phone of the tech going over the van showing work done and possible work needed.
So why isn’t it in the VW Service Manual?Yes every 4 years Cambelt and water pump plus i would have all tensioners and rollers done as well.

I’ve read the 2 page attachment and I still don’t see any reference to 4 years for the cambelt replacement, the intervals refer to milage?Its in the workshop manual

Cambelt is mileage plus a visual check to see it's not deteriorating, but for years dealers have recommended 4 years based on their experience of the guaranteed lifetime of the material.
I think in the main, every year after year 4 increases the chances of it failing.

Rubber products deteriorate from the day they are manufactured, hence they have a cure date. Having worked as a mechanical engineer for 39 years with mean time between failure, cost, and criticality deciding maintenance intervals I can’t help but feel VW are applying the belt and braces on this matter. As for a water pump failing, how many members who’ve run well over 4 years have experienced that, my guess is hardly any, we’re not back in the Morris Minor days.
I’m currently running an A4 TDI with the original water pump (2001)!
