Camper van weight

Interesting thread this. Our AutoHaus conversion is a T28. Side conversion with hob, sink, grill/oven, a RIB bed and a Remo pop top bed. Usually it’s just my wife and I plus the dog, with limited baggage for a couple of nights. I don’t think that’ll be a problem. This summer however we’re also taking the teenager, a driveaway awning and enough baggage for a 2 week stay. I’m now a bit concerned on weight limit. Will need to find a local weighbridge to understand it better.

Just checked mine last week on the weigh bridge and it was 2.5t. Mines a T28. It includes me, full tank of fuel, water. most of the kit. Its gives me an idea of what I can take extra. Its usually just me and my wife so we should be ok.

Here in Spain we weigh our camper at start of every trip (cost is £1.20) local weighbridge station in our village. Last year we got stopped in Madrid and police man ask what weigh was in the van (lost in translation) and we showed him the bit of paper printed out at weighbridge 8 days before. He was more than happy, but I guess the other 4 motorhomes and campers being weight across the road from the Police stop were not so lucky.
What most people forget is that if you are involved in an RTA and the insurance company find you are over weight, you are not covered. For the sake of a few quid, worth the time to do.
As they say, "each to his/her own"

Hopefully it's free - it could end up being very expensive!
It's North Wales, not known for being that forgiving! I think they were going "educational" for once.

Here you go, Denbighshire.

"This is an advice session and no action will be taken if overloading or other issues are found, but we will work with you to reduce the load."

Weighing for campers & caravans

Sure, but addressing @JOG's point, if pulled by VOSA, any education will be via your wallet (if overloaded).

The weighing is free - I’d very much doubt the follow-on action would be if overloaded!!!

I'd edited the post before to quote that they would "work with you".

I'm assuming if you rock up to an organised weighing session, you wouldn't be loading the van like the Clampetts* anyway.

* showing my age here. :)

Clampetts............ now that is showing your age. I wonder how many folks on here will google that one?

Anyone volunteering to get weighed knowingly or obviously overloaded deserves to part with their money - no?

So we weighed our van (T28) with everything loaded that my wife and I would usually take for a weekend trip. 2,570kg, so fine.

For our upcoming trip to France have now added teenager, bedding for teenager, dog and dog accessories, driveaway awning and various other bits and pieces including a full tank of diesel and have worked out that we have 60kg left for clothing, toiletries and anything else last minute.

So it should be fine. However, I was wondering what tolerance there is on weight limit? If, for example, we wanted to bring some wine back :) The stated limit is 2,800kg but would another few kg cause driving or safety issues? New to van life so I have no idea. Do most folk worry about this or not so much?

I think the answer is no to both but carrying over the weight plate numbers would be illegal. I've no idea what the penalty might be in the very unlikely event that you got a pull and put on a weigh bridge.

I suspect most don't give it a first let alone second thought!

From what I have read, SVTech have up-plated vans without any modifications being undertaken, which to me means that your suspension and wheels/tyres can run higher weights than those they are plated at.
So running at or just under your maximum weight shouldn’t be an issue - especially when you consider that the T28 can have a GTW of 4447kg.
However, going over can obviously result in a fine.
Perhaps consider uprating your van if this will be a repeat issue.
