I'm thinking these are h4 because the drl is the yellow bulb and the reflector is dimpled as per the description earlier in the thread. Since the location of the drl is different, would I be correct in thinking there's some rewiring to be done to upgrade?

Hi,

They are H4’s. Genuine H7’s will plug in and work, but the low beam will turn off when you switch to high beam.

The lights can be coded to run so that low and high beam stay on at the same time when using high beam.

That way you don’t over load the wiring , and will end up with the lights working as VW intended.

Thank you. Next question. I haven't looked around the forum properly but will do over the next few days. To get them coded is there a diagnostic tool? My old discovery forum mates had Hawkeye diagnostic machines with a location map on the forum for fellow members to use. Is there something similar for t6?

Just saw vagcom, carista and vcds thread. More choice and cheaper than the disco. Only 2 for that and both £300approx.

Is there anybody watching this thread who has upgraded to the H7 units and could comment on the difference to the H4's.

So I understand they are a straight swap for the standard T6 H4's and there is not any coding necessary other than to allow the dipped to remain on when the full beam is on, is that correct?

Would any body know if the Carista unit would enable the dipped and full beam option. There does not seem to be any yellow pins (VDCS users) in the deep south west (Falmouth).

Would happily buy a set of H7's (from the forum shop) if the reports were positive and I could get the recoding done.

FWIW i (the forum shop) am in Plymouth so not exactly close but if you do decide you want to go for the H7s and fancy the trip i will happily fit them/help to fit them and do the coding for you here ?
I havent personally used the H7s i went from H4s straight to full LED so comment on the difference

I changed from H4 to H7 and the difference is noticeable. I saw a T6 coming towards me with H4s on at night, and I genuinely thought they were side lights. Much whiter, and when they’re coded properly, high beam is much better.

Yes it’s an option but bloody expensive

Pauly, so we have at least one positive recommendation for the H7's, I am likely to be coming back through Exeter in a week or so, a detour via Plymouth would be easy. If it were convenient I could sort the lights then.

I am also happy to fit them myself and drop by for the recoding.

I upgraded to H7s from H4s and put some upgraded Phillips bulbs in.
The difference is fantastic plus retaining the nice factory look.
Do it, you won’t be disappointed!

The coding can be done at anytime it doesn’t need the lights to be fitted (but wouldn’t recommend using the main beam until they are changed !)

I've changed to h7s from h4s, as yet not found anyone local to to help with coding, dip beam is a lot more visible now and holding main on using flash shows it will be great, definitely worth doing for what I'm my case was very little money

I do find the dipped beam much better. The light seems whiter, despite using standard bulbs. They’re on a par with my 2 year old BMW 1 series (with H7) and way better than my wife’s A4 with H7s and projectors.
