my van is in at vw getting a noisy belt and tensioner replaced under the all in warranty, while it's in they have sent a video saying the rear brake lines are corroded and have marked it down as red as in needs fixed urgently.
Its beem mot'd by the same garage as part of my all in package on the 12/10/24 and didn't even get an advisory for anything.

I don't think they thought that through, unless you parked it in the sea after your MOT in October.

Quick story - last week my daughter took her BMW back to the dealer for a new EGR cooler on a recall notice, which said clearly that it would be free of charge. She goes to collect it later and they informed her that she owes £350 for a full service as their database said it was due one. She then told them that we do our own servicing and it was done in October. They then asked for £100 toward the cost of the oil. She told them that they should have phoned her first and she could have told them it had been serviced, but as they didn't, she wouldn't pay anything toward it.

Don't take their word for it - either go see it or ask for some pics.

What it may or may not have been like 8 weeks ago is interesting in light of this, but doesnt get you any further forward.

Tyres and brakes - don’t cut corners. Absolutely sense check snake oil salesman BS but I prefer to have my trusty local tyreshop check them out.

Why are they looking at rear brake lines while working in the engine bay ?
Sounds like BS , that they can spot something being THAT bad that it's lept out at them while doing an unrelated job the other end of the van but they didn't see them when INSPECTING them specifically for this just 2 months previously.
Have them note the work and quote for what needs doing and take it to an independent garage for inspection.
Probably need a rub down and paint up at the very most .

I had VWVC ring me and tell me that my front pads and discs needed doing. As I'm happy to do my own I declined their generous offer.
Stupidly I never checked them and a couple of months later prior to my Norway road trip I ordered new discs and pads and started the job. Imagine my surprise when I removed a set of pads with nearly as much meat on them as the new ones. Scammers.
Get the brake pipes checked elsewhere would be my advice.

Many years ago a dealer (not VW) told me the car needed new front discs/pads as they were 75% worn after carrying out a service. I got a nice discount when I told them they were 2 days old (I do brakes myself too) and asked if they'd actually serviced my car or someone else's

My Uncle had something similar, was told his brake discs were badly worn on his Bimmer.

He got it home and put the micrometer on them and they were well within spec. The auld feller went to complain and they got arsey and said "what what do you know bout it?"

He replied, "I've a Masters in metallurgy and design car factories for a living."

He got his next service for free.

Gotta love the quiet way our parents used to Top Trump BS-merchants! Not like today’s Gen Z knobs who promote themselves as scholars after collecting Desmond in basket-weaving or Media Studies!!!
