Diesel Night-heater hot air outlet

My heater intake is in the footwell of the drivers side step I have the leisure battery plus solar control plus switch over all under the drivers seat I then have the heat vent coming through the rear of the drivers seat base
Controller is then at head height above the drivers seat belt location
Had it put there for a couple of reasons but also easy to reach if you are in the pop top bed ?
Happy to send pictures if this helps ?

you can cut the t6 panel like that but we buy them in , plus vents etc

Certainly looks the cleanest job, instead of a nozzle sticking out somewhere random!

Thanks Albel, controller I was thinking about using the useless storage above the centre console! We don’t use it for anything else so thinking of running the control cables up there

I looked at that also as long as you can reach over not sure on your seat set up but you don’t want to be messing too much if you wake up and it’s chilly also not sure what set up it is regards the thermostat if the controller is this then make sure it’s located at the right height otherwise it could shut off quicker if you haven’t got a pop top ect or it’s not up ? Heat rises

I think most heaters have the option of external thermostat or default is taken from the air inlet, which should work fine.
Understand the headache on the position. Perhaps a long stick

Hello
I'm in the middle of my first van conversion and have squeezed the leisure battery and DC to DC charger under the drivers seat. It’s a tight fit and quite a struggle.

I've been thinking ahead about installing a diesel heater (the unit under the van) and all the online installation videos show the cold air intake through the side step and the hot air up through the floor under the drivers seat. Is this the only way to do it? There's so little room to install anything under the seat and I dont relish the thought of removing the seat and all the electrics I installed to squeeze something else in.

Also, is it ok to have hot air blowing up over the leisure electrics?

Any help or advice would be very welcome.

In my opinion this is the best way to install the heater. If you buy a quality heater such as Eberspacher the plugs etc are designed to be outside and can cope. I've seen plenty of cheaper models come into our workshop with failure and the pins are corroded on the connections.

If you want to see the underside of a van with one fitted next week feel free to give me a message as i've got one coming in and can facetime you if you like. Everything fits just right and it's not too tight to do

Thank you so much for replying. I wasnt questioning the mounting position of the unit and I understand that the best place for it is underneath the vehicle.

My question was where the hot air duct enters the cabin. Everything I have seen shows it coming up under the drivers seat and this is where all my leisure electrics are located and there's very little (if any) room for a hot air pipe?

Ahh, sorry i've misunderstood. We don't bring it up under the seat but approx 130mm towards the rear of the van. It lines up with one of the factory lashing point holes in the floor. If you use a 67mm holesaw it's not a bad cut as you use the centre of the rear hole and this then also cuts out the other hole and lines up perfectly for units to be fitted and still allow the drivers seat to be pushed back fully.

Hope that makes sense!

Are you saying 130mm from the back of the drivers seat and in front of the cupboard? So it will be under your feet?

If you could take a photo of the hole locations, that would be amazing.

essentially yes, i don't have any pics to hand but once you're under the van you will be able to locate the holes from the lashing points that would've been in the floor pre conversion... this is the area to drill up. If concerned i'd start with a 2.5mm drill bit before committing!

I'm being thick.
I can see the lashing point 130mm behind the drivers seat, but that would be inside the cupboard that will run along the offside wall. Are you saying you bring the pipe up vertically at that point and duct it horizontally along the floor, through the cupboard and out into the cabin?

@Campdavid I’ve merged your thread with a similar, so you’ll see some examples above yours which will give you food for thought.

My Propex outlet is bang in the middle of my drivers seat. Means my 110Ah AGM LB has to sit on its side, front-to-back.

I don’t notice the heat causing any issues with the battery.

I’m just trying to talk @Dellmassive in to selling me one of his seat base batteries where I’ll move my LB over to the passenger seat base.

that will be the difference then, you're not being thick haha. typically units will start a little bit further back than this point as any further forward at normal height will restrict the drivers seat from being pushed back to a comfortable distance for taller drivers.

Would be impossible to say without seeing pics of what to recommend
