Disappointed

Not knocking how you felt but I thought a wetsuit kept you warm . When I was young I did a 7 mile swim along the Thames in aid of charity with a diving club I belonged to in February. Admittedly I was suited up with a hood as well but I don't remember being that cold when I finished but then I was in the water you on the other had were standing on it so to speak with the wind howling around you. I know how you felt

Wetsuits are very good now and I rarely get really cold but the changing afterwards (usually done at home but this was on the beach) was dismal.

I've done some windsurfing and more recently some triathlons with lake swims and it doesn't matter what you do or wear, cold water is cold when you get in....

In fairness, the triathlons are usually in the summer when the water has warmed up a bit, but the first one or two training swims of the season are bitter, and changing outside after is the worst bit.

I've done a few, all with sea swims.
My first was in a force 8+ wind with so much chop it was hard to swim at all. But for some bizarre reason I managed to hobble in first.

On my last one I sliced my foot open exiting the swim. Didn't realise thanks to the cold, did the cycle with weird cramp in my foot, ran with a rather grim gritty feeling in my shoe, finished, took my shoe off; full of blood. Ambulance job and haven't done one since!

I'm sure they're not really good for you... All the stress and strain on the body and the injuries....

My last one was Wimbleball and since then I've just been cycling. However, cold or wet it gets, you can always put some good clothes on and stay fairly warm and dry.

Agreed; I managed to kill my immune system soon after that tri. Couldn't shake constant illness for almost a year. They thought I'd picked something up with that injury so I was even tested for Hep C! Worked out myself that I'd just been overdoing it. I now have strict rest days and don't compete much. Still love a good run, cycle or sea swim though.

Anyway back to vans.... :D
