Do I really need a BiTurbo

Hi new to the forum thanks Paul for getting me in , been lurking for a while but yet to find an answer my own question even though it has been discussed here

I'm looking to buy a new T6.1 and can't quite decide wether to go for the 204ps BiTurbo or a 2.0 high line , high line has better spec for less money but you can't help but think it's a big decision to get buyers remorse after the event

There's always the argument what you don't know doesn't hurt you in respect to wether the extra Hp will be missed

Opinions gratefully received

You definitely don't need one.

But you might want one.

It depends on what you're used to. I have a 340BHP Volvo C70 T5 and a Hayabusa and none of the T6/.1 engine options feel quick to me, just different flavours of slow.

But if you've been driving a Citroen C1 with a plug cap missing they might feel a little brisker. You need to try a few and decide for yourself - ultimately only you will know the answer.

Best of luck, and welcome aboard.

You might want to do a bit of research about the BiTDi 204 engine, as it seems to be the most fragile.
My choice fwiw would be the 150.

There all 2.0 engines I’ve had the euro 5 140hp single turbo brilliant engine very reliable and great on fuel
Next up was the 150hp single turbo euro 6 again very reliable never let me down in 5 years bit more thirsty down to regens but never the less good van.
Now on to the bi-turbo had around 9 months no problems as yet but all negative reviews seem to be on the earlier models mines the later model.
All have been highlines current one being sportline. I wouldn’t personally look at anything other than min highline but everyone’s preferences and affordability is different.
Everyone secretly wish’s for there perfect spec but often can’t find them and have to compromise in some way.
Back to engines the 150 seems to be everyone’s preferred spec being 6 speed or dsg is the better box to have also

Best of luck with the search and don’t rush there’s loads out there

Thank you both I suppose even as an adult I just need the prod across the decision making line especially when I've no experience of transporters

My works van has been a Berlingo ,which hasn't actually missed a beat in 120k but it's time for pastures new and I need more room to sleep and get my mountain bike in when I'm off in the wilds

This is very true.

I was originally dead set on a Highline, but my shortlist came down to a HL and a Startline with the Business Pack.

The addition of the BP bought the useful spec fairly close to that of the HL, both very close in price, both 3000 miles on the odo, and the Startline had the slightly better spec conversion (solar, Webasto, etc) so having made a firm plan I ended up abandoning it and choosing the SL.

I've found the spec thing to be completely true. Looked at a lot of these now trying to find that perfect one and they all seem to have one or two redeeming feature and then some that you wish it had for for reasonable money , and because the VW dealers can't order new (I'm told) you can't spec what exactly you want but it is what it is I think if found a nice 150 so I'm going to go with that

Oh you have done it now I'm looking at startlines an area of the VW ads on web I haven't trodden yet

T5.1 180 BiTDI DSG 4motion with spanking new engine here. Its cost a fortune to sort out, but it is surprising fun for a 2.4t van.

I am being waved at by a an owner of a early 204 same spec t6 camper with 14k on the clock. I know i might need to put a new engine in but i will walk in with my eyes open.

= £16k to put right

I’ve got a 199 biturbo and it’s great to drive the extra power on tap is lovely to have. BUT as @Sasquatch so ably put it wanting one is very different to needing one!

I have a late 2019 199 T6 Caravelle Exec 4Motion from new, No real problems, don’t even know what Hi line spec or any other spec is. I just wanted best performance with All Wheel Drive capability and the best spec, found one with nearly everything I wanted except down hill assist as a cancelled order the last of the T6's before the T6.1. It really comes down to what you need, want and can afford. I tend to procrastinate over things constantly weigh up this and that, so fortunately missed the troublesome early 204 bhp T^ which had or have all the engine problems. If I had procrastinated any longer I probably would have bought one of the new Landrover 110 Defenders because I had been waiting for years for them to materialise. I absolutely need 4x4 capability not a case of want.
