What does the controller do? Does it just tell you when a regen is taking place, or can you use it to force a regen? Got a link?

No force DPF regens by @Daku's controller, just indication of an ongoing process(by flashing DPF LED, MFD text message and acoustic gong).
Have a look through this thread.
I have explained all functions in detail.

Hi all, had my van full serviced a month or 2 ago and now it has issues with the Dpf filter. The yellow coil started flashing when I got close to work, left it all day then set off back home, the coil light came back on within 5 mins and went into major limp mode then died on me!!! And I could smell diesel fumes. but I’d say in the last 6/8 months I’ve been working more local, only driving 25mins at max to jobs, with half the week hitting a motorway for 10 mins at a time, and I use Asda diesel or any supermarket one. The garage rang me and said Dpf filter blocked, so went for a clean and they have rang me again to say they have tried 10/12 times to clean it out but with no joy, apparently it’s super blocked so I need a new one which will cost £1650 + vat plus labour and everything else do they said about £2500!!!! any one give some advice? don’t need this right now

The DPF is made of rare metals which is why it is so expensive. Money for replacing sounds about right.

DPF has its own light. Yellow filter. Ever seen that? Or does yours not have it?

It would be cheaper to get it mapped out, but that is totally illegal and if you do get busted you’ll be putting it all back on, along with a hefty fine.

You need to learn to listen to what your van is telling you. Plenty of info on this forum with a bit of a search.
Short journeys are not an issue if you keep the fuel level above 1/4 and let the van regen when it needs to.

Some people swear by oven cleaner. No idea if it actually works. Id suggest you’ve not gotanything to lose at this point.

I don’t think there is much to lose with removing the DPF and attempting a back flush. If it doesn’t work there is slightly more of a labour charge to pay over going straight for a renewal.

Just to clarify, how have they tried to clean it? On or off the van?

Cheers huw, no no light I noticed, just the flashing yellow coil came up, it’s a 2017 model, also I’ve had it remapped so any messing with it would get rid of that wouldn’t it? I don’t wanna do that really, it’s just a lot for a filter!!! Ha ha ya can’t win can you, screw the cars don’t look good or drive like miss daisy and you can cause it more issues

If I do end up getting a new one ( which looks pretty much likely) I’m defo making sure I get the old one back!! buying a second hand one an that, you don’t know what they’ve been through eh! vans done 74,000 so realistically you would expect the same life again

Have they actually confirmed the dpf is blocked? The Coil light can be any number of things.

If its really blocked I would remove it and send it to a dpf cleaning company for back flushing

Off the van, sent it to a Dpf cleaner
I’d be getting it back and buying some oven cleaner. Bit of effort and time might help. Really depends if you are desperate to get the van back on the road.
Definitely keep the old unit though if you do get a new one.
But learn how to let the van clean itself as that is what it is designed to do.

74k is low mileage for needing a replacement, I recall seeing a post by @mmi that inferred they are good for 150k or 200k miles. I would therefore want to find out why it got so blocked at 74k miles, in case you put a new one on and that gets blocked too… happened to me once after paying for an EGR replacement, I was beyond angry!

Ha ha oh my so since this discussion I did put a new one on in mid Jan ( because apparently they tried to clean the old one 10/12 times but wasn’t happening) and now the Christmas lights are back on!!!!!!! not just the yellow coil spring flashing ( which is the one that’s always on ) but the 2 exhaust lights come and go as they please. Been in for a full service ( they said they will find the faults) so picked it up yesterday (after having a full service ) and they tell me they don’t know what the problem is!!!!!! Need to see a vw specialist who will diagnose properly, can still drive it but power comes and goes but the worst is the smoke that bellows out of it as you put the foot down. It started again when I got to Cornwall after a 8 hr drive. van fills to 400milish and that just gets me there leaving around 65miles so van is sat for a day then I go and fill it down there then the lights started again. Roughly do 60/70 miles a day to work an back, (just so you all have the back story to the day to day) any help is much appreciated guys

Hi all,
Just updating about the van, I’ve had it into vw for a full scan and they tell me the turbo seals are lettin oil through, hence Dpf problems!! They say it needs turbo doing, an egr flush and a NEW Dpf !! Which shows on their system which I definitely ain’t doing after spending thousands on the one that’s just been put on it!! So does anyone recommend around the Wyre/ Fylde, Lancashire area a vw specialist to fix and look after my baby to get it back on the road?

I can't comment on the turbo seals, they may have failed.
I very much doubt that you need a new DPF, it's easier and more profitable for them to replace it than clean it.
If you decide to get it replaced, ask them for the old one back, watch their faces drop. A DPF, blocked or not, is worth good money due to the rare metals inside it.

A mobile mechanic in Bedfordshire (I know, it's not practical for you due to distance) uploads videos to Youtube and shows how he unblocks DPF's that garages have said must be replaced, without removing them from the vehicle. He does a lot of work for garages that can't solve DPF problems. I've never met anybody from the company and have no connection to them but two friends have used them who had persistent DPF problems and were very happy with the outcomes.

I think you are doing the right thing looking for a local specialist.

Had my dpf removed about 6 weeks ago. Reason, was seeing a lot of reports of failures and damaged engines. Cost about £400 labour and blanking off. Result is quicker, and fuel economy up from 30-32 to 39-45. So will recover the cost in about 2 years at my annual mileage. No outside visibility issue as looks just the same. Engine is a 147KW = 180BHP I believe.

I can‘t see how the DPF can be damaging an engine, do you mean EGR?
