EGR cleaned but still having issues.

Yeah, agreed, but it was making me paranoid about driving it, and I was contemplating getting rid of it, so I’m happy!
It was like when I was 17 again and driving round in an old banger, and I was never sure it’d get me there!

All in, it cost me over £1100 for mine, so you did well under warranty!
I had EGR Cooler flushed out at 8000 miles. My van was 6 months out of warranty but VW honored the repair, otherwise it would have cost me £369. Only use premium diesel now which contains` powerful cleaners and a cetane booster to improve combustion, thus keeping all of the fuel and combustion parts clean.

That’s a result. Did you see them flush it? I’d like to see exactly what they do. Where does the chemical enter/exit the cooler and what does it look like when they’ve flushed it.

I got mine with 21k on the clock so I don’t know how it was driven and whether they used cheap fuel etc. I only use premium fuel and change the oil much earlier than required, so fingers crossed!

Im not sure how they do it but they have to break the pipe from the egr to perform the job. So a new pipe has to be fitted after the flush out. Reading more into this issue, it is quite a common failure. VW advised to try and maintain 2000 revs when driving. I have also started using premium diesel. So at 30 mph in 3rd gear in my van gives 2000 revs and amazingly it is more efficient.

Very interesting @JDTech. Which power output is your van and how many miles has it done? I’ve had my 204 flushed twice at Hadwins, and four times at Lookers.

That is abnormal. I started to use BP Ultimate diesel to help keep the combustion side of the engine clean. Also you could try Arcoil diesel treatment. I do.

This is their website;
www.powerenhancer.co.uk/archoil-ar6900-d-max-advanced-diesel-fuel-synthesis.htmlink

So the learning I have picked up on;

Try to maintain at least 2000 revs - this advice was from VW
Always use premium diesel
Always maintain at least 1/4 tank of fuel, as the engine cannot perform DPF regenerations below this limit - this advice was from VW
Use a fuel enhancer like Archoil as per the link for added protection. Sign up to their news letter to get a discount on your first order. 1ml per 1 litre of fuel ratio.
Hope this helps

Hi @Handyman ....just seen this regarding this additive ..has it been approved by Vw as I’m still under warranty ..don’t want to upset the VW Gods :thumbsup:

I dont think it is approved by VW, but talking to a VW technician, VW also sell a similar product, so they obviously realise that this is best practice to use a fuel enhancer to keep your engine in a clean condition. Have a read on their website, they are not a mickey mouse company. Iv'e been using it for the past month or so now.

I guess it’s no different to using the diesel ultra fuel that cost 10p a litre over normal diesel and would work out cheaper..thanks :thumbsup:

Hi, I have a 204 DSG. I had my EML come on in June ( 1 month left on warranty) and they ended up doing a EGR flush. Previous to this I had the diesel filter light on several times which they said was due to short journeys even though I was doing several long work journeys!
3 months and 2000 miles after flush the same fault diagnosed but VW will not cover this under warranty even after such a short time or mileage since it was meant to be fixed under warranty. Spoke to a local VW specialist who said its likely the EGR valve will need replacing. This cannot be right that VW will not cover under warranty can it?
Any advice appreciated as can't afford to replace valve as just been made redundant :(

Watchdog??

There's enough of us to back it.
I reckon @Jay is right - there is a very worrying pattern of egr failures and masses of posts on here. I haven't had it yet as I've only had mine for two months, but I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time. Any consumer lawyers on here?

I would get on to VW UK Head Office and complain. If after you get it fixed, think about using only premium fuel and fuel additive to keep the combustion side of the engine as clean as possible.

@Handyman I’ve been down this road with VWCV and the customer care side and it was a waste of time. They say it’s down to the dealer, but the dealer says the opposite. One blames the other and the only looser is the customer. Local dealer probably gets a pat on the back from VW for keeping warranty costs down to a bare minimum. I’ve used only premium fuel for the last 35k, and it has made no difference to my EGR problems.

IMO, If expensive branded Diesel was the solution to better combustion and reduced pollution governments would have implemented this simple change and made the ‘better’ fuel mandatory. What a simple way to help meet emission reduction targets.
In the UK and the rest of Europe Diesel has to meet EN590 which primarily controls sulphur content.
It’s personal choice if you want to buy from ASDA or BP but it’s about as relevant as choosing a laundry liquid.
