Interesting this as I've only owned my t6 a week and its been making all the same whooshing noises as described here. Have not driven any other vw transporters i thought it must be normal, but after reading this thread i decided to investigate it myself before calling the dealer. What i discovered was that the airbox was not properly fitted into the 3 locating lugs on the far left of the lower casing. It was perched on top. As soon as i refitted it properly the whooshing noises have completely stopped. It wouldn't surprise me if a few are running around like this as its easily overlooked and very difficult to spot.I've got a 15o Kombi, and it makes a high pitched whistling (and hissing?) noise at around 2000RPM, especially when the engine is cold. It seems to be coming from somewhere directly in front of me as the driver. I've had the van for a couple of months, and thought I'd get used to it but it's really bugging me. It disappears as soon as I back off the gas (so is definitely engine related) and is much less noticeable (perhaps even disappears entirely) when the engine is at temperature.
Could this be a fault? Or (as a sound engineer) is this just something that annoys me, but doesn't bother anyone else? Anyone else noticed anything like it? I've driven other T6s, and haven't heard a noise like this on another one, so I'm pretty confident it's not 'normal'...
ANY thoughts / tips much appreciated!
Any chance you could upload a quick photo of what you mean?Interesting this as I've only owned my t6 a week and its been making all the same whooshing noises as described here. Im sorry denismo, i can't do that as there isnt room to stick my phone close enough, and if there was room i don't think a pic would be conclusive. But imagine your are stood facing the engine bay, the airbox on your left. It is in 2 halves, top and bottom. There is a spring clip each side. To the far left there are 3 lugs on the bottom half. There also 3 prongs that go into those lugs, before you then fasten your spring clips. Well my prongs hadn't been inserted into the lugs, instead they were sat on top, therefore allowing intake air to escape whilst at same time the intake noise was sounding like a split intercooler or something. I hope this helps, my thumb is knackered!Any chance you could upload a quick photo of what you mean?
I had Vw Assist out today, checked out all joints /pipe ect for damage. Nothing showing up booked back into the
dealer on Wednesday.
Mine’s done the same, booked into JCT600 next Friday, 25k milesIf it was Turbo, you'd have some obvious drop in power.
Mine was down to a steel flexi-pipe on the back of the EGR valve. If it's the same as my issue, lift the bonnet and listen around the rear of the engine as someone blips the throttle. You should be able to hear a hissing sound quite obviously.
This is what you're looking for, and the black soot is where mine was leaking. The pipes are not expensive, about £17. I actually purchased 2 in case this was a common issue. It was quicker for me to fix the issue myself than wait for VW to fit me in.
It's not a difficult job, just a little awkward to reach one of the bolts.

Took mine in yesterday to JCT600, they did it whilst I waited. Had to wait for it to cool down though first.I've got the fitting down to 4 minutes

Didn’t notice if we did. Just got the smell of fumes in the cab when it was doing a regen. Was you losing any power before you got it sorted?
@Dellmassive
There you go Sir.
Old one against new pipe, and no modifications.

This is the one i've just changed after around 24k

This is the original one from new, that I changed last year after around 30k

I suspect the new one i've just fitted will do around the same mileage. As mentioned above, it's not a big deal because it's a cheap part, and an easy job to swap over.
The first obvious symptom will be the smell of exhaust fumes coming into the cab, and the confirmation is the hissing coming from behind the engine.
On that note, if you or a mod wants to change the title to 'exhaust fumes in cab' or something more suitable for the search box.
Just done mine (2018 DSG, 40500 miles). There was a choice of two from TPS, a short one and a longer one depending on the manifold. Mine was the short one like the photos above, but the new one now has more/tighter packed bellows, and costs £88.61. Wouldn't have been too bad to change if I hadn't drop two bolts (and if you can't find them they will be jst in front of the DSG filter, and aren't magnetic).
