EGR flexi-pipe: Exhaust Fumes In Cab, Hissing From Engine Bay.

I have a similar problem with exhaust fumes in cab and when i was filling washer bottle the other night i glanced down and discovered the front of the engine behind radiator was completely covered in black soot .Cannot find where it is coming from.any ideas

The EGR cooler to EGR valve tube runs across the front of the engine on the 150, where it joins up with the rubber tube from charge cooler on top of the engine, check the stainless tube for cracks and that the bolted connections are tight.

Hi all on I’m getting a strong diesel smell inside the vehicle not always there but getting regular now, van is 67 plate 204 DSG

It’s not there on start up from cold but if the van gets hot and I stop say in the shops for 20 mins it’s there after that start up for at least 5 mins then clears. It can also come on just while driving but can’t always say when it’s going happen, one thing I noticed today was I drove the van hard away hard from the lights then it came on very strong indeed.

Spoke to my dealer but can’t get it booked in for a week to look at it, popped the bonnet can’t see any leaks and van running fine at the movement.

Anyone had this ?

Call out vw assist if your within the 36mnth warranty.

It certainly sounds like that I’ll be straight back onto my dealer tomorrow and informing them my children won’t be going in the vehicle until it’s sorted and it had better be quick.

Thanks Dellmassive

Update

Van went into Marshall’s VW Bridgwater Somerset today and fair play the service and attention to my problem was very good, it was a split EGR pipe which they had in stock and replaced under warranty.

Obviously there is a big problem with this but my dealer seem to be on top of it.

As far as I know, the new part is a modified one, so you should be ok from now on.

I'm on my 2nd egr pipe. (revised, new part is actually flexible and thicker)
2nd high pressure fuel pump (revised)
3rd water pump (each one revised again)

I cannot wait to be rid of the t6 in a couple of years, so expensive, thirsty and unreliable. Shame it drives so god dam good and is epically refined.

I'm on my 3rd EGR pipe, but that's because I tried to be ahead of the curve and predicted these would be a common problem when my first one cracked, so purchased 2 more of the 'unmodified' pipes back before they were redesigned.

Oh well, only another 20k on this one before it cracks again, and I can buy the revised version.

How many miles on your vehicle out of curiosity ? Got me worried now and are they both 204 DSG models

Mine first split at 30k, then just before 60K.
I wouldn't worry if you've had the revised pipe, they look much better designed.

Hi guys,

Thank you for posting your problems and fixes, photos...

I have exactly the same issue. Fume smell in cab and motor warning light on.

With care I have put my hand in the area you have indicated and tachaaaaan I have easilly felt a leak.

below a photo of the crack.

Any idea about how I can get the parts in Spain?

Hopefully I get the reengineered part

In the short term you could try flue cement to completely fill the groove in the bellows where the crack is located, then fasten a wide hose clamp over the filled groove so it locates on the bellows shoulder both sides of the groove, this will prevent the flue cement falling out.
OR
Fibreglass flue rope, flue cement and hose clamp.
Ideally you want to drill a small hole at both ends of the crack to reduce the chance of the crack propagating, that would require removing the bellows.

There are VW dealers in Spain, perhaps one of the Spanish forum members could assist.

Well, I've now joined this particular club. Exactly same symptoms as above, first noticed the whooshing air leak sound, slight smell of fumes inside. I'm mainly motorway miles, but am always noticing regens when stopping at home these days, after ten or so miles of town driving. On hold for VW service now. 2018 2WD 204 PV.

My 204 Dsg has just failed its first M.O.T with a leaking EGR but fortunately still under warranty. Has anybody else had a similar experience or knowledge of this problem?

What did it fail on?

What was the fail code on the print out?
