EGR Issues - Ongoing problem.

LakesT6

Caravelle Exec 150 DSG
T6 Guru
Van spec: MY18 204tdi DSG, covered 43k.

During the warranty period the EGR has been flushed 7 times, approximately every 6k miles. The last flush was done in January 2020. Each time the fault code was P0401 EGR insufficient flow.

The warranty expired in February and the van is now showing the same fault. I’ve booked it into the van centre later this month and told them about my dissatisfaction with the product and reminded them that they had 7 chances to fix this. I’ve got a case ongoing with VWVC customer care but I haven’t got any faith in them.

The van is on finance with VWFS, does anyone know whether they would put some pressure on VW to get this sorted? I’m fed up with this now and it’s taking the shine off my ownership.

I’d also like to know whether the EGR and cooler is now and updated part.

Answers on a postcard

I had a new EGR fitted last October and the part had a revised part number and was manufactured in the August. I bought it in the September so they obviously have a high throughput!

@Spaghetti that’s interesting, did you have problems with the EGR during the warranty period?
I had one Adblue error in the warranty period where it gave the dreaded 650 mile countdown and yellow bottle symbol so I booked it in, but it cleared after a couple of hundred miles so I cancelled the appointment. That was at about 25k miles.

The Adblue fault and elevated NOx readings from the dodgy EGR appeared to be related on mine.

I had the same last year after filling the Adblue, like yours it sorted itself out. No issues with the DPF either, the light has never illuminated. What puzzles me is the recurring nature of the problem.

On a side note, what would be the worst pattern of journey and driving style for the EGR systems life span?

Time to get your angry face on. 7 flushes is just ridiculous and you have every right to demand they replace the EGR like they should have done when it went in for the 3rd flush.

On a side note would it be worth considering the £800 2 year extended warranty once this issue is resolved?

I’ve had no problems with the DPF on mine (touch wood!) .
I don’t know the pattern of the opening of the EGR so difficult to say which driving style is worse, although a cold diesel tends to be more sooty than a warm one, so lots of cold starts would seem to be problematic.

I tended to get the engine emissions light when I was on the motorway with the cruise on, but that could just be a coincidence.

I’ve raised another case with VWCV and been assigned a case manager, for what it’s worth. Has anyone had any success with the motor ombudsman?

Hi - Having similar issues with my T6 showing the P0401 and P20EE codes on my Carista OBD. I've just bought the van which is 2 months out of warranty, but only done 12,000 miles. I've spoken to VW who said they 'may' consider fixing under goodwill if I can show them the service history. However, I can't find the service history and it's not logged with VW - the van was previously an Avis vehicle. So my questions is, do I have a leg to stand on regarding getting the EGR fixed by VW under good will (surely 12,000 miles is not in the operating window for wear and tear), or am I wasting my time?

If you haven't already; ring the finance company and tell them what's happened... that should have some gravity with VW themselves.

Hi - I've tried to ring, e-mail etc Avis but they just won't reply. Can't imagine that it wasn't serviced under a contract but they are not interested at all unless I want to hire a van!!!

Could you please share Carista "Detailed ECU info" (under Service menu)?

Yes, exactly, thanks.

I was curious about your van's engine software version because the recent software update should have eliminated fault P20EE (31103). That's the reason why I'm chasing P20EE faults around the Forum. So far no P20EE faults from new software....

"Fortunately" your engine still has old/original software:

Engine Part #: 04L906056KA Component: R4 2.0l TDI Software version: 4047

The current engine software is the following:

Software version: 6163

Just to wrap things up with the EGR saga, it’s been flushed for the 8th time. I kicked up a fuss with VWCV customer care and got the work done free of charge. Trading the van in next week and I’ll be glad to see the back of it. I’ll be joining Team Exec shortly.

lf there's no service history logged with VW then you may be in trouble.
However, at 12 months and 12,000 miles would it not be about ready for its first service now?

The on-board says the last service was 320 days ago, so, yes, it is due, but it should have had an annual service every year. VW would not take that as proof of a full service history as they said anybody can reset that. I think service intervals are yearly so I was expecting some service history. I think my only option his to get a full service at VW and hope that they are in a generous mood and fix the EGR issue.
