Fogstar Batteries

Mine cuts out overnight, when only the fridge is cycling. It trips on ‘high temperature discharge’ which I think is a red herring, I’ve never seen it warm. After 5 to 20 minutes it comes back on.

I’m currently about 15 emails into it with Fogstar

Does your fridge reset and come back on again or do you get the orange flashing light issue of the waeco/dometic? It seems when fridge left on only, I get the orange flashing light issue more often than before.

Was wondering if it was just a coincidence or because of the Fogstar switching off. Is their dialogue with you suggesting this is just what the battery does or that you have a unique issue?

I have a Vitrifrigo fridge, I don't think the issue is related to the fridge though. The battery turns itself back on after a short time (5 to 20 minutes).

I know it's been off because; 1) my BMV702 app shows a power out 2) My lighting controller 'resets' 3) My LPG gauge goes into 'power up' state 4) the Fogstar app shows an ever increasing fault count

I suspect a faulty temperature sensor, and that this will end in a replacement battery.

Let us know how it gets resolved. Their batteries look like good value for money so it'll be interesting to see how their customer service holds up.

Just installed the 105ah Fogstar battery after firstly charging to 100% via mains charger in the house (took 14 hours from 20%-100%) I switched my domtecic 12v fridge on and the next morning the battery had dropped to 72%. I switched off the fridge and left the battery to check the solar was charging it ok. Was minimal sun but could see thr capacity creep up from 72% to 75% in about 6 hours sat on the drive. I have a victron mppt 75 controller and smart shunt installed. Went back to check yesterday and battery up to 100%, however, when checking history I saw it had dropped suddenly from 105% to 73%. It then charged up again. Anyone know what's happening please?Screenshot_20230912_185409_Fogstar Drift.jpgScreenshot_20230912_185419_Fogstar Drift.jpgScreenshot_20230912_185446_Fogstar Drift.jpgScreenshot_20230912_185455_Fogstar Drift.jpg

If it's brand new it could just be the BMS calibrating itself, assuming the SOC data you are looking at is from the battery and not the shunt?

victron mppt 75 controller and smart shunt installed.
- whats does the smart shunt data show?

if the smart shunt is set correctly, . . when the battery reached 100% the Shunt will have reset to 100% as well.

so lets see some comparison screenshots of SOC from both apps.

Yes that was from the Fogstar app, not the shunt.

Just taken these now, I hadn't reset the Shunt history after removing the knackered lead acid battery though :-( I've reset it now.

We just had our first week away with the new 105Ah fogstar. It's been fine except for one night it seems to have switched itself off for half an hour. At the time there was very little constant current drawn, and the fridge was on, which means drawing about 3 to 4 amps while the compressor runs for 5 mins, then no draw for 10 minutes or so.

No harm done this time, but I'd like to fix this issue. Before I raise a ticket with fogstar, has anyone any suggestions?
The issue is resolved now by a replacement battery.

The old one would regularly, maybe once a day/night, turn its' output off, even though the load was present (compressor fridge), after about 10 minutes it would come back on. In the fault history the discharge overtemperature event was counting up. My victron BMV702 was recording the 'shutdowns' in the history.

My van wiring has been perfect for 3 years with the previous AGM, so pretty sure that the fault was with the battery itself.

Anyway, after a few attempts, with the assistance of fogstar, to alter settings, a replacement battery was agreed. Fogstar support were pretty good, aside from a couple of times when they asked the same questions I'd already answered. I would advise anyone going through this process to do it by email.

The replacement battery has been in a week or so now, with no shutdowns and no reported errors.

Nice,

That may have been a FW bug that they have patched in the BMS.

Glad you're so sorted.

Interesting thing this morning, I assumed the Fogstar Drift had a heater but it didn’t appear to be charging - or was it?

The heater kicks in below zero C.

Charge is blocked below zero C.

Outgoing power is ok to -20c

Heater is shut off at 5degc

Mine shows heater symbol on side of battery.....sb230.

Does yours?

Also you battery in the pic shows 100% and 6detc.

When I came out to the van later and the temp was higher it charged fine and topped right up.
According to research, the heater pad(s) are only powered by the incoming feed from the Renogy not from the battery itself and if I’d have waited a few more mins I think just over 6degC is when it would have allowed charging again.

Yep that's it.

Heater is powered from incoming charge source.

your battery is showing:

its 100% SoC

but still taking 24.1A charge, ( so its still charging, the BMS is calibrating to 100% top end)

and its internal temp is 8.3degC

++++++++++

here was mine this morning . .

92% SoC

charging at 25.1A

3.2degC temp

so far the battery hasn't been cold enough to see the charge temp blocking . . . maybe tomoz?

My heater kicked in this morning

Charge briefly kicked in when engine started then a new icon appeared and it went to 0 amps

Gradually heated up battery, charge kicked back in at 7.3 degrees

Took about 25 mins to heat up
