Fuel tank capacity

70 litre is normal tank size, when the fuel light comes on you normally have around 10 litres left
I have an 80 litre tank in mine (euro 5) and most I have ever got in is 72 litres and that was taking it past 0 before refilling

Mine is only taking just under 60 litres and saying it’s only got 50miles range left. I’m thinking the gauge is wrong or the sender is out

Several people have reported going way beyond 0 mile range so I think they just have a large reserve (not that I want to test it out)

I’m going to give it back to them under warranty and investigate. If it should be taking 10L more I want it sorted

The best I have filled in is 69,2 liters when remaining range was 25 km (15 miles).
Diesel foaming causing airlock perhaps? Perhaps refill after a few hours to see if the "missing volume" then goes in?

Sounds about right. 70 litre tank, 50 miles left on 10 litres which is about 25mpg.
You’re getting around 400 miles/tank which is 26mpg. Assuming you have the standard 70litre tank then the figures are spot on.
You could always lighten up on your right foot, I get 30mpg knocking about & 40mpg+ on the motorway, and that’s from a 204 DSG 4mot.

But 60L plus the 50 mile remaining range, approx 6.5L (based on the 35mpg I get), plus the reserve capacity which is at least 5L, is about right. I don't get the problem?
Or have you paid for an 80L tank?

I normally fill up at 500 miles (diesel 150) but I have once gone 30 miles past zero and lived

I specced and paid for an 80L tank.

I've just filled up the tank from having only 10 miles left and I was only able to add 73.49L.

Is this really an 80L tank?

Surely I'd be filling up closer to 80L?

Confused...

Tank won't be empty, even when range is showing as zero (you probably have 30 to 50 miles range left at that point). If you got 73L in, it's deffo not a standard 70L tank - not unless it was p!ssing down the side of your van whilst filling.

Definitely wasn't pouring out

That's good news then. Odd that the sensor is 6 litres or more out.

Almost certainly a deliberate ploy to try and avoid you running the tank dry and incurring the expense/inconvenience of having to bleed the fuel system of air.

I’ve reached the conclusion my van thinks it’s got a 70 litre tank. When I collected it I managed to put in 86 litres, generally I fill up with 70-74 litres with the range around 25-45.

I have an 80l tank, I ran it for 30 miles after the low fuel warning light came on & put 77.5litres in.

I have read this thread with interest. I am running my tank down as low as I dare as I'm having the tank dropped and a night heater fuel pipe installed on Thursday. My current reading is 40miles left in the tank, but it got me thinking. We ran the range down to zero in July on holiday and arrived back late at night, at the campsite. The next day we had a 4-5 km drive to the nearest garage for diesel.
I drive a 2017 Shuttle, and once brimmed the next day I took a picture of the gauge which would suggest that my euro 6 Shuttle has an 80 ltr tank. My handbook isn't in reach to confirm this. Google doesn't give much info.

This might beg the question, is there generally any gunk in the bottom of the tank that might be be sucked in once the tank gets very low?

This isn't aimed at Salty in particular, just a general question.
