H4 headlamps with LED bulbs

It's like every now and then morality rears its head and someone pipes up with their sermon on what should or should not be done regarding modifying a vehicle.

The funny thing is the particular preacher will have a difficult to suppress opinion on a particular topic while happily lowering, raising, re mapping their pride and joy, not entirely hypocritical but at least a tad joyless.

Maybe in future to appease any lighting cops we could refer to "having my H4s remapped" or "fitting B14s to my H4s"?

Peace.
If that’s a dig at me please point out the legal status of lowering, raising, re mapping? I think you will find these are completely different.
These 3 examples you give will have no effect on anyone else driving on the same road.
However it is illegal to do some of the lighting mods posted on here. It is also illegal for a reason. It can easily dazzle other road users creating increased safety risks.
However if you are selfish and don’t give a shit about any people’s safety the that says a lot about you?
Maybe if you wanted LED or whatever headlights you should have bought a van with the legal ones on in the first place.

Thanks for sharing the results. Do you have a link to the specific LED bulbs?

Looking forward to your H4 findings.....
They are a well known British brand... Jamiewin off amazon, H11s

Just messing H4s now, I also picked up some DRLs that seem spot on, not sure on the H4s yet, report coming later...

Drls swapped, can't complain with them at all, they are a lot brighter and basically match the rest of the lights, they are smd type bulbs with a projector on the end, no bulb warning for these. 20191211_204720.jpg IMG-20191211-WA0012.jpeg IMG-20191211-WA0014.jpeg

H4 report then, bulbs in no problems , you can align them by twisting them in the holders to get the best beam pattern. I would say the beam pattern isn't as good as halogen but it's not horrible like you see on some cars. Overall the leds fit in the holder without modification and I managed to fit the ballast type jobby in there too so it's basically oem fitment. I did get a bulb out warning when changing to main beam or flashing, not sure which one but they work fine, no flickering etc.

In terms of brightness, same place, same camera settings as last night to keep things even, dipped and main beam shots below.

Overall they are noticeably better, I'll run them for a few days and decide on the beam pattern then comment further.

Hope that helps, also jamiewin, 30 quid, I'd say they are definitely not as bright as @Stay Frosty novisights, be interesting to see how they compare to the GTRs once they arrive.

Edit to add, them pictures probably don't do them justice but I don't want to change camera settings as it'll ruin the comparison. I can take another in a normal mode if people are interested to see a more representative view?

Well the GTR Ultra 2 H4 headlights turned up from the States today :)

So the bumper will be coming off tomorrow to remove the headlight and mod the rear cap, i have some 50mm PVC end camps that i can plastic weld to the cap when i mod it.

First impressions, is that its a well made bulb, adjustable collet for fine tuning

proof will be on how it preforms.

Hopefully the Osman P21W LED turn up early next week from the UK, so i can put it all back together before next weekend.

They look good! Just so you know you don't need to take the bumper off, the caps come off in your hand so you can mod them seperately and reinstall if needed

As Rich says Bryn you don't have to pull the headlights to replace the lamps but I think you had already talked about cleaning out dust from the radiator.

If you do simply swap the lamps out by removing the access caps to take pictures and put us lot out of our suspense then we will understand!!:sneaky::whistle:

Cheers guys, i've seen a few U tube videos, and i'm not going down the route of mucking around with tight spaces and using a mirror.

Removing the bumper and grill will be one of the easiest jobs with my T6 camper build, plus i really need access to the intercooler and radiator, there is a fair bit of spiniflex, bugs and dirt the needs to be removed.

Glad i removed the bumper, had a heap of cleaning to do after our trip around Aus.

I trial fitted the lights, had to remove the metal clip and insert the bulb and then refit it, the rear of the fan powered heatsink did hit the back of the cap, so i grabbed a 65mm hole saw and played around a few caps extensions.

I think i'll contour the PVC Pipe end, as it will handle the heat better than the above lid cap, and it will allow me to plastic weld it.

I fitted the lights back into the van, no bulb out warning  although i can't tell much in the daylight, but i didn't notice any flicking when the engine is running.

Tomorrow, i'll sort out the PVC pipe fitting and work out how and where ill bring out the Canbus module and LED driver to fit it.

I struggled with the parking light being so yellow, so some Phillips T10 LED's and 5w resister are ordered for express post

Shame there isn't more room in the housing.

You've got to leave room in the back to allow for the reflector to power up and down via the dashboard thumb wheel too.

I managed to jam everything in on my first LED lamps and there was a distinct moment where one headlight stuttered for a split second as it swung upwards where some idiot thought he would check for just such a thing.

Off topic and watching Monty Dons gardens around the world TV programme he featured Spiniflex grass, as well as grass trees and various eucalyptus, cheers.

We are having quite a few issues out west with 4x4's and their DPF causing 4x4's to burn to the ground.

It doesn't take much for a 600 degree part to light up stuck grasses and spinifex.

Thanks for the heads up about the up/down issue as well, i completely forgot about that, as i would have been the second person wondering why the headlight wasn't moving:rolleyes:

Looks good! Can't wait to see how those perform!

I ended up swapping a load of my bulbs and fogs to leds to colour match :D

Who are you asking and are they for the H4 headlight?

I'm using Novsight the ones on Amazon at £63.99, Bryn has the GTR Ultra 2s I think?

Haha sorry. Was aimed at everybody who was looking for those bulbs. They're available but only from the US.

Hold your fire then Mat and wait to see what Bryns GTR Ultra 2s perform like, certainly they look pretty good in the Headlight Revolution video on Youtube.

The Novsight ones I'm running are a marked improvement on the stock H4 and can be bought on Amazon UK, the video showing them is on post #82, you will need the Novsight canbus box too though although that gets sent free of charge when needed and with the T6 it's needed due to flickering.

Back to Bryn and looking at the quality of your workmanship mate I guess my cutting a groove through a lower corner of the cap for the wires in and out won't fly!

Hey Frosty,

Nothing wrong with your solution, i've been wondering how i was going to do mine, after looking at it yesterday, i can't see any other way.

As the cap needs to be removable, I'll most likey just rebate a groove for the driver wiring and use butyl to seal the wiring and reseal the cap from dust.

I was hoping to drive out to the workshop today to make a start on the caps, but it's bloody hot, and tomorrow its 38 degrees.

Good news is that i have to be at the workshop tomorrow for deliveries, so i might as well punch though the heat and sort out the caps while i'm waiting.
