H4 headlamps with LED bulbs

Hi Bryn I drilled a 40mm hole in the back of the lamp access cap then cut the tops off of a suitable size aerosol can lid and hot glued this extra bump in place to accomodate the lamps fan and heat sink, cheers.

Thanks frosty,

I'll have to look at what i've got in the Workshop, i got heaps of aerosol lids.

im pretty sure i've got some rubber end boots and PVC pipe ends around that size as well that might do, i might just see how these fit and see what clearances i have.

cheers,

So im going to order in the GTR Ultra gen 2 LED for my H4 tomorrow, as im not waiting for the RHD version of the MLED 2.0 to be released in 6-12 months

H4/9003: GTR Lighting Ultra 2

LED Headlight Bulbs - GTR Lighting Ultra 2 *NEW* - Headlight Revolution

As for the review, i believe it is an independent review, they sell other high end LED bulbs.

So the question im asking for those that have fitted CANbus modules when fitting the LED Bulbs, is i'm guessing that the connectors were H4??? and you fitted them inside the rear of the headlight

GTR Lighting PWM Interface Module (H4 Style Connectors)

Cheers,

Bryn
I saw that review also! It will be interesting to see what they are like

I've got some supposedly powerful leds coming for the fogs tomorrow, will be interesting to see how good they are, should make a nice infil for b roads at night whilst I work out what to do with the H4 vs H7 vs other decision in my head o_O

H7s brand new are not far short of the price of the THQ beauties with their flashy sequential indicators but factor in two pairs of decent LED or Hid lamps for either type of headlight and you're soon heading towards a grand on lights, get a pair of sub £100 decent LED or Hid H4 lamps and spend the rest on Xmas after all we've only got another 5 months of these lousy dark nights!

Hopefully they are decent, interesting that they are the only led bulbs on the market with led chips made for cars, instead of generic led chips.

If i remember right it was a 700% increase in light compared to the Phillips LED at around 200%

I'll post a pick when i've fitted them and aligned them.

Yeah I noticed that, the philips never come out well in the tests on that channel, I get the impression they are more of a safe oem style update rather then being a genuine high power upgrade?

I think the wattage must help! Either way, it'll be really interesting to see how they compare to the novisight beasts @Stay Frosty fitted

The trouble with a lot of the info/blurb we see and hear on the web is that numbers are bandied about that sound fantastic ie. they're huge and with the advertising blurb in particular are absolute Boz Wellox!

Going OT as usual but when I was into car audio a few years back the reality of one car sounding twice as loud as another was pretty much down to a measured 10 dB difference between cars and confusingly not normally a case of two subs being twice as loud or one sub having twice the excursion of another then being twice as loud, it was literally ten times louder on a logarithmic scale in dB to produce an increased air pressure wave/ soundwave, that your ears perceived as being twice as loud as the original sound... often that meant 4 subs instead of 1 and many thousands of watts of power instead of the original, say, 500 watts.

I think the increase in light output we're trying to achieve without much in the way of a benchmark, apart from the poorly performing H4 Halogen combo, is misleading in a similar way and is further confused by different levels of expectation and perceived improvements... that waffle aside I'm still enjoying my mini LED honeymoon period!:D

OK, LED fogs fitted, work with the cornering lights and no light out warning as of yet, done a couple of pics, one to show colour difference to halogens and two parked on a b road, fixed exposure in the camera for a genuine comparison. Comparison pics are headlights on and then the one underneath is with fogs on too.

For the money I'm pleased they were 30 quid off amazon, its not a complete fix for the H4 situation but at least you have some fill in light when needed. I've ordered a set for the H4s to test them too

I don't think it's all about power. We are trying to replicate OEM levels of headlight performance using an LED light source that is pretending to be a bulb. OEM headlights are nothing like that. Looky here. REVIEW: Lextar LED PES headlamp module! - HiDplanet : The Official Automotive Lighting Forum

It is more than just raw lumen power, these LED bulbs need to match the existing profiles of the original bulbs to allow accurate beam pattern.

Together with a good beam patten and more light, equals a better driving experience at night.

I'm looking forwards to aftermarket full LED headlights, but ill be in a different van by then, and OEM LED lights will be the first option i select.

I'm guessing that you lot using your foglights to supplement dipped beam are doing so when it's not foggy? Come on people, we're not 17 year olds in Corsas, or pensioners in Nissan Jukes for that matter.

Most of my driving is on unlit b roads, when it's empty and safe, I use the fogs as infil with the H4 main beam.

I can take a picture on Leicester High Street if you wish though?

Better that than running illegal headlights though.
I think the point is, we all know how bad the H4s are, so anything you can do to increase your safety without blinding other people isn't a bad thing, personally I'll swap the H4s out when I can afford too.

My next van will have oem leds, I should have read this thread before I bought this one :(

I have suggested this before, but got told by Skyliner that it was still illegal use of foglights, to make a separate loom that will activate your lower bumper lights (often referred to as foglights ;)) with main beam only. The fog light function can easily be turned off with VCDS.

I did this on my Amarok. I even went as far as swapping the headlight switch for one without front fogs.

It's like every now and then morality rears its head and someone pipes up with their sermon on what should or should not be done regarding modifying a vehicle.

The funny thing is the particular preacher will have a difficult to suppress opinion on a particular topic while happily lowering, raising, re mapping their pride and joy, not entirely hypocritical but at least a tad joyless.

Maybe in future to appease any lighting cops we could refer to "having my H4s remapped" or "fitting B14s to my H4s"?

Peace.

That's not a bad idea is it! I wouldn't mind linking them together! Wonder if you can do it in vcds?

I read that it is an option deep in the VCDS bowels for certain countries Mk7 Golf GTIs, but I've yet to come across it for anything else.

I am sure the only option I have seen is to disable Fogs when Hi beam is on.
