Headunit Issues / Halo 11

Currently have a 21 t6.1 with the "Discover Media" unit and Digital Dash.

In the two months I've had it, it's been with VW three times. They're apparently done updates to it that were outstanding, doesn't change the following issues:

- if left for considerable time (overnight) booting up of the system can take up to 20 minutes, more likely 5-10mins. Holding down the power does not force a restart in this situation.

-WeConnect cannot assign a Primary User (keeps saying contact customer support) it's been with their connectivity team now for 3 weeks. I get standard "we'll come back to you shortly once our advanced tech team has found the issue" replies.

-the unit does however connect to VW (they can "see it" and it does over air updates. SOS light is green.

- VW now say it's the SOS module which is on lengthy back order (as they've seen it before in their own cars?!) I'm not convinced.

- Someone else recommended changing the 5F module?

However, as a previous owner of the Halo9 in an Amarok, I'm liking the look of the Halo11. Would I potentially face the same issues as above if I don't explore changing the SOS module and/or 5F module, or could a Halo11 solve my issues?

It would be very difficult to remove discover media as it integrates with so many systems on the van such as digital dash, air con, ADAS system if fitted etc

Oh really? I've just seen posts with Halo 11s installed in T6.1s just assumed I could have it done - guess my frustrating life with the stock headunit will continue

They will of had the stock unit not the discover media unit.

I've not heard or seen a solution around this yet

What your describing sounds exactly like discover media does it have SatNav built in

It certainly does. I have never hated a piece of technology so much, VWs response is awful.

The longest time to boot has been 25minutes. Pretty terrible when I use the unit for Sat Nav etc.

Hiya

it will work but will not display on the digital dash, all vehicles settings are displayed on the halo and adjusted via the steering wheel.

Thank you - and would you advise getting the outstanding issues fixed with VW first?
Apologies I have no idea how the "system" works, all I know is they tell me the boot delay issues are caused by the SOS module -and an independent VW specialist said it was more likely the "5F" module

I stand corrected!.

I say it's up to you how you play it. That said VW will do anything to get out of warranty issues so if ADAS goes wrong later they'll blame the aftermarket radio. Also I'm still pretty confident doing this will upset ADAS and make it non functional ask @BikerPa about this we had lots of issue and difficulties get VW to rectify this

Thanks all really appreciate the help. Never felt so helpless with "tech".

If I was VW, I'd support the aftermarket heavily and allow people to change the entertainment systems with ease and with full integration as it's clear they have real issues across the range of commercial and private vehicles going back years.

The service centres in dealerships generally just make it up as they go along. I quote one recently. "Ah it's the same in my Cupra, you just have to live with it". No.

@secretK9agent as Chris @Dav-Tec has stated I faced similar issues with my early 20’ build 5F, ADAS woes & dealers blaming anything but the obvious to get out of resolving.

It took 3 different main dealers to finally get the ADAS recalibrated & a major FW/SW update to make the 5F function in a ‘tolerable manner’.

It has gradually got slower at logging/starting up over the last 6 months since the dealer did the FW update. Seemingly due to the OTA updates it does.

My 2p is your 5F unit may need replacing (as mine probably does as still shows errors in VCDS/ODIS) but as Chris says if you replace it with aftermarket you will be in an even bigger hole with the integrated systems the van has & completely up the creek WRT VW & ‘any’ issues/repairs with interconnected systems & all CAN BUS electrics on the van.

VW CV dealers are so strictly tied into franchise agreements & processes they will not/cannot do anything unless OK’d by the factory first having gone though everything else 1st.

That said what we as customers would call warranty work is not how VW see things it’s simply a £££ thing as they are screwed financially with diesel-gate & EV development costs with the Chinese already years ahead of them.

My advice will be to keep pushing your dealer if they are trying to help.
If they aren’t try elsewhere as I had to, just expect more months of waiting & weeks without the van IME….sorry I can’t help further.

Was the digital dash installed from factory, or aftermarket?

Thank you, very much seems like you and I have had a similar experiences. I'll keep pushing the dealer, my local one is Reading who have been a lot more helpful, they are also the ones pushing an SOS replacement but will see how that goes!!

It's also had all the onsite updates done and the OTA updates.

Aftermarket digital dash by VanHaven
Hmm I can see how this is likely to play out ...

VW will blame 3rd party workmanship (coding/wiring in this case of digital dash) as I've heard they've stopped supporting these installs under warranty.

You may end up having to have the original clocks/dash re-installed to move things forward. I hope it doesn't end up like this for you, but at least you are forewarned.

As @BikerPa says usually if you've had a retrofit VW won't entertain I. Seen this 3 times with customers so far.

As above been hearing this a lot , I think this is your issue,

had one owner call up this week and Vw informed him they will not work on it until original clocks were replaced but the company who did the install no longer had his clocks, as they didn’t give it to him
