Hi from Norfolk

Hi all, we are new to VW and looking for advice / help with choosing our next motor, we've been caravanners / tents for years, but recently sold our caravan as not using as much as we used to, and think that a t6 conversion would suit our needs, 2 adults and 2 small dogs, in the past we've owned everything between a small tent, big tent, trailer tent, caravans big and small to huge American motorhomes. but never a compact like the VW Transporter size.. we've looked at a few and wondered if there are any companies that convert that are recommended or to avoid. so really looking for advice from folks who own them.. are there any must have bits to make life easier using. Probably looking at new as prefer Automatics and like the idea off AWD so can go off grid.
We live in Norfolk but like to travel so distance not an issue if the company reputation is good and recommended. Thanks in advance Eamonn

Hi and welcome to the forum. Respected converters will have a long waiting list - those who could fit you in immediately are probably cowboys! Have a look at the for sale section to see what's fellow members are selling and visit some VW shows coming up.

Thanks JOG, We're not in a great hurry as looking to move house before we buy hopefully some time this year (when we find perfect house) so will be busy sorting the move. and get where you're coming from with the companies that can fit in immediately ;) usually a reason lol .

Welcome to the Forum! I came across Knights conversions in Spalding Lincs a couple of years back and they did a great conversion for me on my LWB T6....Im in Suffolk so even nearer for you I guess. Jonathon has vans at various stages of builds and normally has a hire van to try if you need to. Highly recommended for a high end build.

@Eamonn - forum tip - stick an @ before a screen name to alert the user you’ve mentioned them.

Good luck with the house move

@JOG I used to run a really good forum for American V8s which switched to FB due to members wanting a FB page, lost its way and although i'm still a admin i rarely go on anymore, FB Sucks and as you say too much abuse and BS for my liking.

@Eamonn have a look at different layouts. When there’s only 2 of you, do you need rear seatbelts? If not then have a look at a u-shape or l-shape layout so you get a sofa or 2 that can be converted to a bed, or you can sleep in the pop top and keep the table/sofa arrangement unaltered ready for the morning etc. Also give you plenty of storage under the seats.6FF875F5-8F02-4E5B-8A45-D3F187E35956.jpeg414E95A4-4D11-48CA-8853-751740C06623.jpeg

@Bigsidavies Cheers hadn't thought of that, i'd need to add a couple of seat belt clips for the dogs harnesses but not the belts i'll look into it TA

@Eamonn We used Visiontech in Colchester who are not too far from you - they fit Hilo poptops which is what I was after on our Kombi as well as insulating and lining the van and I went to Bristol for an Ovano Switch bed/ drawer ( they have a dog version but probably not suitable for two ) but it all depends what you want which is the advantage of converting. But Visiontech had a 6 month waiting list in October I found them very professional.

These are the convertors I've visited and whose conversion work I've reviewed in detail:
  • Hoyles (Denholme, Bradford)
  • Status 1 Automotive (Batley, Leeds)
  • Rising Sun Campers (Coventry)
  • Crystal Custom Campers (Barwick In Elmet, York)
  • Jaibow (Holmfirth, Huddersfield)
  • Exploria (Brighouse, Halifax)
  • Platinum Wave Campers (Solihull)
  • VisionTech Automotive (Colchester)
  • Three Bridge Campers (Milton Keynes)
The ones I shortlisted were Exploroia, VisionTech Automotive and Three Bridge Campers. In terms of quality, all three stood out head & shoulders above the others (though they're all expensive and they all have a long waiting list).

Ultimately, I chose VisionTech Automotive to do my conversion on the basis that they fitted Hilo pop-tops, they were flexible and innovative, and I got on well with Dan (the big boss).

HOWEVER, thanks to VW's innovative and logic-free build scheduling , I am still waiting for my van to be delivered to the convertor, so I can't tell you whether I made the correct decision!!

@Eamonn - @Bav has just reminded me I also got a quote from Exploria - mainly as I had one of their beds on my last T5 which was a solid bit of kit. It was just down to logistics (and EV range) that led me back to Visiontech - main thing is to get booked in. Both are innovative but you need to have a fair idea what you want to achieve in terms of design.

Hi do you have a link to the detailed reviews? Thanks.

Sorry, when I said "reviewed in detail", I meant inspected and assessed - I didn't go as far as posting my thoughts and observations. I can PM you with a quick summary of each if that would be of use?

Hello Bav, I'd be interested to read your views on PWC and Vision Tech Automotive if that's possible. Many thanks, Idris.
