Hi people

Dunno about Wales but wilding is technically illegal in most of England other than bits of Dartmore so if your gonna be living in a van then you'll have to pick your spots carefully .
Also power , water, waste etc all needs to be taken into consideration if your not gonna be on a campsite .
Gotta be sustainable if it's gonna work .
Winter is obviously far more demanding.

Solar power would be a a real bonus charging you leisure and vehicle battery. Having addresses of Laundresses is a good thing to have on ones lists. So far as parking up is concerned one would need to know best places to be able to do that and where else to go if your favourite is taken. My vehicles have been 4x4 or have All Wheel Drive for many many years and have camped off road for many years completely out of view and attention, so a VW with 4Motion might be worth considering at least it would allow more options if afordable. One of the best investments that we have bought was a Wallas Hot Plate with 2 cooking hot plates with heating and complete with a blowing fan. Mine was run on Paraffin but most if not all now run on Diesel now. They are comparatively expensive to buy but the double role hot plate and heater all in one had been a huge bonus. They use very little diesel and 12v requirements are very low drain so can be left running all day quite cheaply and heat the van at the same time because they have a vent or small chimney the fumes are vented outside. This also keeps the inside of the van warm, dry and fume free because it is vented and also no humidity and condensation is let loose into the living area, so many bonuses in having that sort of device. Heating, cooking, making a cuppa, condensation free, cheep to run, low battery drain, and reliable, no naked flame. they are popular on Boats because they do not run gas so no risk of explosion CO poisoning. They have a lid with a thermo fan, if the hotplate is hot when closing a small fan blows hot air around the vehicle, brilliant.

I see lots on youtube just parking up all over the place.

What you can get away with and what's legal are 2 different things.

It's highly likely you'll get away with parking up in the same spot a few times (or even many times if spread out over an extended period), but if you are consistently parking up in the same spot, the chances that someone notices and takes exception (and reports you) increase significantly.

Unless you're constantly roaming around, I speculate you'll soon run out of different places to park up in the same area (or at the very least you'll spend a lot of your time looking for/planning your next park-up).

If it looks like a camper van then i guess people will suss you out easily....
 Yeh - avoid 2-tone vans and go for a subdued colour.

You might also want to consider using a black blackout curtain that hangs behind the front passenger seats, as external (or even internal) cab screen covers are an obvious sign that someone's sleeping in the van.

Yea, great idea...

Not trying to put you off - just curious - would you still have a fixed address of some sort so you can have a bank account and the DVLA can contact you etc?

My ex said i could use her address but, how does it work if that wasnt available?

What are costs like in owning a good condition T6.1?

Insurance
Service
Fuel economy
Etc

I know the answer could be wide just after some average figures if possible...ta

What's your budget?

Max £45k i think....

I would prefer to buy one from a reputable dealer with a good warranty and customer service who uses quality components....

So many companies doing conversions/selling converted vans its like a minefield!

I want a van that is reliable too as i have read about staying away from certain variations because of some engine issues...

This is all new to me so i really need good guidance.

For £45k ish should be able to secure something decent. Most vehicles loose about 50% after 3 years or so some do better and I think some T's are one of those depending on history particular flavour or version so on.

AS said by CAB above boats might be another avenue though their is plenty of maintenance. Their is a TV series that gives a little insight.

I have seen on youtube a high top t6.1 with a shower in it!! Looked great...cant see any for sale anywhere!!
As was stated above living in a vehicle is different than a week end or even a week or so and a high top that facility would be with you at all times. However a high top can not get under many barriers. That might not be a problem but you might consider that because they are being used in places to prevent larger commercial vehicles and campers which are bigger than a Transporter from occupying some parking spots and also some inner town areas.
