Ignition Kill-switch

Only problem with a steering wheel lock is that most people probably put the key on the same key ring as the van key for convenience.

Battery powered angle grinders, wrecking saws and chainsaws have given the thief almost limitless capabilities, a piece of steel isn’t an issue.

True on old style car and vans...

But we haven't found a easy way on the van due to the complex electrics...

Old days you cut the IGN or starter feed from the key cylinder barrell.... you cant do that with the modern electronics.

Example..

They ign keyswitch is just an input to the BCM.

The start motor is controlled from the ECM over CAN bus via a relay all in the engine compartment...the revolution speed and power drawn is all monitored.
Too damn clever these vans!
I’ll resist the urge to start cutting wires then

There has been mention on here of Ghost issues on 6.1 vans - try the search function.

theres an interesting thread about a NO-START issues over here.

relating to a issue with a relay . . that's possibly IGN controlled.

this causing the user an issue with a NO-START that needed the van towing back to a VW dealer . . .

all fixed now apparently. . . .

but i got me thinking about this thread, . . . and the "possibility of interrupting the Terminal 15 IGN relay. as a kill switch".

though now I've written that and read it back . . . . i still think its a bad idea on a T6.

and the best option is to fit a "fit for purpose solution"

but im pointing out what we have discovered, so that other can better understand the system.

I'm not sure if you've already installed the ghost but if £450 is out of your price range, there's another vehicle immobiliser called the CAN-phantom that's £349. It works in a similar way but changing the PIN and device's settings is a lot easier to do with the CAN phantom.

I tried to get a ghost fitted to my T6 recently and when I contacted the approved installer he basically talked me out of it as I wouldn’t have enough buttons for the code. I have a start line model but in the process of wiring the MFSW but even with that he said I wouldn’t have enough. Said it was something to do with the electrical systems and only certain things can be used for the code on the T6.

is this just because I have a start line base van?

you can use all the MFSW buttons, some dash buttons, some peddles. . . . more than enough for a 4pin code.

so fit the MFSW - then get the ghost fitted at that place or else where.

I know someone who had an immobiliser which cut the engine half a mile away from his home. The thieves came back to his house, and dragged him back to input his “code” shocking…
