I’ve got a 102 camper which has just gone kaput. I’ve never been hugely impressed by the 102 and the 5-speed so was wondering if I had other options. Other than replacing like with like, how difficult would it be to replace with, for example, the 150, or going even further and sticking a 2.0 petrol (I only do a few thousand miles per year) in it?

Jumping back a stage, what happened to the 102. Its a decent engine and not much reported issues

Anyone put an RSQ3 engine & gearbox into a Transporter?
Well had a early call . To say my driveshafts were ready
The lower output engines only come as a 5 speed and the higher output engines like the 150 only come as a 6 speed (or DSG) so its quite possible you would have to change the box as well
If you get a compatible engine (and possibly box) then i cant imagine it would be too hard to do the physical swap but you will need to see someone that knows what they are doing to get everything programmed correctly for revs/gear selection etc
