M6 Toll

I think the Toll is a great road and I would use it every time, it also helps to relive the traffic heading to Birmingham which in turn helps the motorists who don't use it.
My only gripe is that it doesn't connect to the M54 directly and living in Shrewsbury that makes it a bit of a hassle getting on and off the Toll.
Everyone has a choice on to use or not but without them charging it would never have been built. I do also feel a little peeved that I now have to pay £11 instead of £5.90 as I now drive a larger vehicle so thats 2 gripes.:)

I agree, the M6 toll is a pleasure to drive on, it's like 20 minutes of down time from the madness of the M6

Guy at listers was telling me when we brought the bus. If you brake harder so the front drops slightly as you approach the toll booth it registers as a small van. Not tried it yet though.

That's exactly what I've worked out! Mines as low as it will go on Bilsteins on the front and it's still not guaranteed.

Having been both ways I found just using the old M6 through Brum is just as fast if you hit it at the right time. I used to drive up to Bolton to visit my son in Uni there and found the Toll a real drag re-joining the M6 so in the end I used the M6 and found it quicker. I've rarely used it since unless I need too

I agree if you hit it at the right time, unfortunately I mainly hit the M6 around 7am and that can be a real pain.

I've only used it once and that was thanks to a news report saying the m6 was chocker. Popped into a services there and I was amazed at how nice it was. Not full of the usual riff raff with unaccompanied kids and scrap metal chaps. The road was pretty good too.

What services do you normally frequent ? LOL

I paid car price on the Severn toll last week so the height thing makes sense...... maybe if I air out on approach I get it for free!!!!!!

You get a discount and pay the car rate if you show your camping and caravan club card, only know after checking as thought 9.80 was too expensive. Will know next time.

Thanks - I didn’t know about this. For info; just found out The Caravan and Motorhome Club also get similar discounts.

Never bothered to look, but then again I do know the exit code from the services lol

So having gone through the M6 at 06:30hrs on Saturday, I was charged as a class 4 (£10.10). Not happy with the price I have just spoken to Toll customer service and their response was “ we measure 1.3m from the headlight based on the slope of the bonnet” so I said ok. Can’t you link with DVLA as I am registered as vehicle cat M1, they then said we are a private company and we go by what the management set. So I said ok well mine vehicle is 2.5” lower than standard and my headlights are lower than the 1.3mtr. Amazing they said sorry I can’t help you please email complaints and hung up.
I think they are just ripping everyone off who owns a transporter.

The height is measured through the centre of the wheel. I get through as a car in my T6 but it was a bit hit and miss in my old T5. Try braking heavily as you enter the lane to make the nose of the van tip down. It used to work for me

Going northbound use the lane next to tag of far right and southbound use 3rd lane from left. I get through as a car every single time without fail. Must be slightly out of calibration.
