I believe all number plate makers ,even show plates, have to send the details of plates made to DVLA. That way they can track anyone who uses a false set of plates. Won't stop people from buying the kits and making their own but its a deterrent.
My van has a unique feature which would show up on any camera so not too worried.

Its my shiny bald head. It creates such a flash back that the camera can't pick out the number plate.

I have swapped my plate (private one) on and off so many new VWs over the last 8 years that the criminals, DVLA and the police may be confused lol! VW finance are!
