Newbie tackling first camper conversion.

Hi all! New to the forum and vans.

I’m looking to take on my first panel van to camper conversion in a T6 SWB. There seems to be a wealth of info online for conversions, videos blogs etc.

I’m hoping to keep a diary of the build and update here as I go. I’ll almost certainly be asking for tips and advise on various aspects of the build when I get stuck.

If there are any how to’s or build posts that I might find helpful feel free to post up the links.

The pop top roof and the windows will be done by a 3rd party but I plan to do everything else myself, hopefully all within a month or two if all goes to plan.

Anyway, first things first and I’m hopefully off to view a petrol FWD T6 soon. It’s super low mileage, FSH, AC, manual, colour coded body. I know a petrol isn’t that common, it’s 150 bhp and can be mapped for a bit more of needed, although I don’t plan on doing so.

Looking forward to starting the build.

Trouble is me old mate - you're up against cover tax now. I bought my vans at auction traditionally, id expect to pay £3-4k over the odds now so we've stopped building for a while. Weve got a yellow swamper style van for sale at a really reasonable price on the website that might tickle your fancy - its basic but has all the bits you would need to start you off and to make it your own - depends on your budget. But you might find it to your liking.

jigsaw - more control
Absolutely no way will you get a perfectly straight, smooth edge with a jigsaw. I had to use a fine metal blade to do the centre panel struts and it’s night and day different using the nibbler. Honestly the nibbler just goes along like a knife through butter and the flat ground piece sits on the inner frame without damaging it as it’s just a smooth piece of metal. You just press against the frame and wiz round.
I’ll send you a vid of you want. Don’t seem to be able to post vids on here.

Well I do it for a living and get on ok with a jigsaw....
Each to their own.
The nibbler also isn't very forgiving in my opinion and its harder to correct a bad line in the hands of someone less experienced.

I get on ok with all power tools. Renovated 2 houses from the ground up and laboured with a builder for 7 years.
First time I’ve ever used a nibbler and it was the easiest thing I’ve ever used. Easy to guide, easy to control, no hot metal shards as it’s like a very fast hole punch basically. Just plenty of sweeping up.
Honestly, give it a go.

same here - carpenter for 25 years (still build), professional Nurse for 10 (still Nurse) , van/classic mini builder since I was 16 (still build). I know guys who swear by nibblers, I know guys who swear by jigsaws..... its like a I said, you and I can feel comfortable with tools but absolute beginners might need to try a few, id imagine this guys used a jigsaw before.... so maybe be better until his confidence is up to use what he's familiar with. Once you've buggered those panels, its over.
Aint our van is it to be fair.

Just done the windows on my mates van with a jigsaw and found it reasonably easy however im gonna try a nibbler next time as with a jigsaw we found it harder to follow the inside support frame and went into this ever so sloghtly in places. No great issue as it got filed down and sealed after a coat of primer. The one used by “transporter hq” on youtube seems a great way of doing it

If you are near a scrapyard you could always pick up a cheap panel to practice on before cutting into your van.

I drilled a hole in the centre of my tailgate panel and had a test run first. That piece is ultimately going to be waste.
Did the tailgate first with the thought that I could get a new tailgate if it went really bad.

Im not far from Huddersfield, and occasionally there. Would you mind showing me how to use the nibbler tool?

There is a chappie on here who modified his nibbler to give him a flat edge. I will try to find the thread and post it here....he said it really helped when doing his windows

Here’s a few pics of the adapted nibbler attachment. The first two show the modified attachment, the second two show the spare insert in its original form from the same two angles.
After drilling a hole in the corner the attachment is used from the inside of the van and the spot I’ve ground flat just sits onto the inner skin lip and you then just follow that round for the perfect cutout shape.611256B9-1C14-47B6-A4C6-D61F22714770.jpeg115CA621-1DB7-478A-ABB8-751F7B5031B1.jpegFCEAB54C-A9E2-4CC2-8F3B-D77DD8B57B44.jpeg9610A7E7-EEA7-44EA-BBBB-A4369AC7A83B.jpeg

In ingenuity..... humans are bloody fantastic creatures. Its amazing seeing how people modify and tweak things to suit a task - this it what separates us from the animals I suppose.
