One Piece Ceiling?...

Thanks everyone. I’d honestly be stuffed without the help.
It’s taking shape now!

That roof is exactly what i am wanting to do. Have looked at buying ready made from Plyworx but cant justify the price tag + fancy making myself. Did you use a 10 x 5 sheet of ply as existing roof panel in my T6 is 135cm wide so 4.42ft wide. An 8 x 4 sheet wont be wide enough.. Thanks for any advice..

It doesn't need to be that wide if you are making a Halo roof. 8 x 4 will work.

No, but if you make the entire roof including the halo rim into a single panel then you don't need it to.

I used an 8x4 sheet. Routed it. drilled the holes for spots. Suede covered it. added doorstop around the edge to take the led strip. Then Silkalex'd it in position. so the central panel main panel is not removable. Then made my surrounding edge lager, to overlap the doorstop (hiding the led strip a little) and i could then screw that into the door stop to hold it in place. look ok.

Quick question, added a doorstop?

I am not going to use Sikaflex in case it needs to come down again, so I will have to look for another method. So I'm thinking anything more than 3.6mm will be too heave for hiddenn clips.

yeah, just wood door stop (about 25mm x 12mm i think) around the edge.

I tried the hidden fixings on my roof, but because the ply was 6mm to accommodate the routing. It was a no no!

I think you'll struggle with anything too thick. Its quite a pronounced curve so if its too rigid it will be difficult to hold up both under it's weight and against its desire to flatten out.

@The Bear78 where did you get the trim clips for the ply around the edge (guessing ply is 12mm thick as LED light is 10mm wide I think). Extra long trim clips I am guessing that can go through the thick ply and latch onto the roof!?

Mine is screwed in place. I glued in the oem clips to act like rawl plugs and used countersunk screws. Everything is then covered with carpet or veltrim.
FYI its about 18mm, 9mm spacer (same as led strip width) then 9mm halo ring.

Resurrecting an old thread.

I would like to source either a ready cut piece of 3.6mm ply or a sheet large enough to make my own. Any suggestions please, hopefully in the NW?

Hi, most decent timber merchants will be able to supply this however I think 4mm will be thinnest on 10x5. Lathams do this size.

Hi lads, sorry to drag up this post again but looking to attempt a halo roof myself. I just want to confirm that the majority of the roof (8x4) is purely secured by screwing the 12mm halo around the edges there is no fixing in the centre of the roof? Also would you recommend 4mm or 6mm for the 8x4? Cheers

Honestly save yourself the time and hassle and just get it from Plyworx .......just fitted mine and it comes with all the correct fittings needed.

I agree it would be a lot easier! But 300 odd quid doesn’t suit my budget two bits of ply is a lot more appealing with a bit of effort haha

I made mine from 6mm but if I did it again I'd go thinner. To hold the curved profile it needed fasteners across the width and while you may be able to pop it into shape with 4mm I think you'd risk it panting and slapping the roof constantly.
Admittedly some vans have it glued to the roof which I guess would work.
I was very tempted to just buy a kit but I managed to make the whole lot including lights and trim for £100.
