Phone holders

the vent is still operational - albeit the phone is in front of the air flow.

i found that the cheaper Chinese copy's can be a bit weak strength causing the phone to drop off over bumps.

so now i stick with Branded names.

Basically SPIGEN is all i use now for phone holders and cases. . . . used then for years and never been let down.

i have two of these in the van . . .

and i use these with them . . .

i dont stick them to the phone or case . . . i just slip one in-between the phone and case, so as i change phones and cases i just move the plate over.

Do those magnetic plates in the phone case interfere with the charging when not using cable?

Chance would be a fine thing. I've got a bog standard audio system (ie. without satnav or, in my case, Android Auto) and since the demise of my TomTom Go 6200 sat nav just after we drove out of the tunnel at Calais a few weeks ago, I've been relying on my phone for navigation and the new holder is perfect for it. In an ideal world, I would have had a more advanced ICE system installed by now but if what @Absolut5 says is anything to go by, when they could actually install a decent Kenwood set up is anybodys guess as they can't get any deliveries of the things.
no Kenwood available and no dates. :(

@Skyliner33. If you mean interfere with charging when on a wireless charger, the answer is yes (if the metal plate is positioned between the charger and the charging zone on the back of the phone). As an aside, it's the holder that's magnetic not the metal plate.

Does anybody have a view on whether I'm likely to have a battery drain problem with my holder / charger being permanently live?

Yes... They do.

The plate and phone gets warm/hot and the phone doesn't charge properly.

That's why I dont use wireless charging.

Can't beat a cable imho.

Most wireless car chargers use the side clamps due to this reason.

The 24/7 charger will draw power all the time.....

But without testing the draw it's difficult to say how long.

As an example, I have a 12v USB charger... 5 port. It's rated at 60w. It perm wired behind the glove box.

It draws about 150mA when idle.... And about 2A on full load.

The starter battery max sleep power draw is 50mA.... The van monitor s this via the shunt on the battery.... Go above that 50mA when sleeping and the van will generate a fault code.

"Queisent current too hight" type thing.

.

Because of this I got two 5way USB units....

Connected the 24/7 one to the LB.

And the second one to a IGN feed so it didn't cause issues with the starter battery.

@Skyliner33. If I was you, I'd trust @Dellmassive pro opinion rather than mine. In mitigation, I'll say that my phone doesn't charge with the metal plate in place or at least if it does it's slowed down so much that you wouldn't notice (but as Lee says, things do get hot so it's obviously trying to do something!).

I think what is happening Is, the RF energy is being induced in to the metal plate causing heating...

But enough RF gets behind the plate to detect the phone, hand shake and commence charging....

So i think most of the RF energy Is lost in heating the plate, and not being induced into the phones QR coil.

Net effect.... Hot metal pate, Hot phone and not charged phone.

+++++++++

so for me i love the magnetic mounts and plates . . . but use a cable for charging.

my Pops on the other hand loves the QR charging and has a charge dock in every room in the house . . . but doesnt use the magnet phone holders.

Thanks, I use a cable in the van but wireless in the home. Think I will stick with a tradition clamp bracket.

I think Lee is spot on there.

If anyone is using the apple 12pro and above these is a fantastic solution

Get a spigen air vent mount for the apple mag safe charger, it works fantastic, never fallen off once, total cost about £45 and worth every penny

I lace it on the vent and screw it tight, the MagSafe sticks to the mount with provided sticker, , push the wire out through the vent, get in behind and hard wire jump in car and hold phone in front of mag safe and it attaches and charges

If you have car play I also bought a wireless adaptor about £100 on Amazon so phone automatically connects as I turn on ignition

In box me if I can help anyone out

Ill grab a few photos later, I've got both the Brodit mounts, the top one is for my auxiliary lighting and the lower one for my iPhone next to the USB socket for the carp play.
Both work well but I ned to try and move the heated windscreen & hazard switch to the other side with the dif lock switch if its doable.
If it possible to move all the switches over? It's puzzled me why they didn't fit the switches nearest the steering wheel and the blanks opposite for us rhd.

No - they are handed and aren’t made in any other configuration than what comes out of the factory.

What’s everyone with a T6.1 using? I’m using the Belkin MagSafe air vent mount but I’m worried about damaging the air vent fins over time.

I think I might have found a solution to holding my phone

I wanted to use the blank switches on the right by the gear stick but wasn't sure they wouldn't pop out with the weight. I'd like a reversible solution in case I don't get on with it. Don't want a magnetic mount because I use wireless charging and didn't want to block an air vent. I have a comfort dash

So I discovered that if I remove two of the switch blanks, I could clamp a phone onto there instead. I had a good browse of amazon for a holder that was the right size and shape, and one that would fit my phone. I had to bodge the mount to make it fit (with a makeshift shim) to stop it from wobbling or drooping. Holder is big enough for an iphone xs with an otterbox case on (but I'm using it to take the pic)

It's the exact position I wanted it in. Can still get to the vent and puts the phone in a dead bit of dash real estate where the dog and kids can't knock it. Can also control it with my left hand when needed

Driving to Wales on Friday so will give it a proper test then

I am looking for a phone holder for my IPhone 6 Plus in my T6, has anyone used a

ScoscheMagicMount™ PowerHub

Currently available at Go Outdoors.
I thought it could go in the cup holder in the right of the steering wheel.

Got a link to the mount you got?

Nice one! How was the road trip to Wales with it? What “bodge” did you perform to make it more secure?
I've been using it a lot, actually every time I get in the van :)

Because of the shape of the jaws and the size/shape of the plastic piece it grips in the dash, the unit droops down. If you drive anywhere it'll bounce up and down.

I cut a piece of plastic, actually an offcut from some plastic garage tile I was thinking about fitting, to stop the unit from bouncing. I cut a letterbox type hole through it with a drill bit, milling drill bit and a file. Didn't take long. Then used a bit of innertube to squeeze in and take up the slack. It was a bit of a trial fit with a plan to do something neater at some point but it's working great so i'll probably just leave it! The other advantage is it spreads the weight of the clamp over a slightly larger area. You can see it in the second photo above.

It's rock solid, doesn't hit my knee and allows me to plug a phone in. Wish I'd had it from the start, it's what I've been after for a while. Also fits a variety of phones which is handy
