I have always wanted a drone but live too close to Southend Airport to fly it anywhere locally, including Southend Seafront which is also in the no fly zone :(
If only I lived in the middle of nowhere oop north

Thought f’it and bought one. There are some places nearby I can fly it. DJI Mini 3 Pro incoming

A very short break in the wind and rain today allowed me to at least get the thing in the air - never flown or even touched one before so totally new to me.

Initially had a gimbal error on screen but luckily realised that a. the gimbal was not the propellors and b. there was still a black piece of foam behind the gimbal

Then I couldn't remove the backing paper from my Operator ID sticker but managed eventually and stuck the crinkled ID to the drone. Am printing a new one right now.

Anyhoo - got it in the air - amazed how stable it is and quiet. A bit apprehensive about how far away it went but sure that will subside.

Excited to do some more flights when weather allows - isn't it supposed to be the summer now?

@t6blo. Well done - your first flight experience was about the same as mine and, like me, you should relax a bit after a few more flights. I had a minor panic attack in France last month when we were camped by The Loire and I flew it quite high over to the other side of the river and it went out of sight (but only because a hedge got in the way) - it didn't help that I'm partially deaf and couldn't hear it (it's my fault really as I'm too vain to wear my hearing aids when out tin public!) . I pressed the home button and it came back straight away and panic over (but it seemed like 5 minutes!).

I reckon their stated flight time with the lightweight battery (the ones marked '249') is a bit optimistic, so I recommend that you copy me and get another battery and also a charger of some kind. I found that plugging the cable straight into the drone was painfully slow to charge so I bought a small single battery charger off eBay - it charges from near empty to full in about 45 minutes and also has a USB Out to charge something else at the same time - at least it's supposed to but that bit didn't work when I tried it on arrival and the firm in China have agreed to send me a new one whilst letting me keep the old one as well. I've also discovered that the drone doesn't particularly like landing on grass unless it's cut very short as the delicate propellers start to strim it so I bought some clip on skids that raise the body of the drone by about 50mm and then a folding landing pad that pops into the carry bag - one advantage of buying stuff from bricks and mortar shops as I did is that you can talk them into giving you freebies like nice padded bags!

Thanks @Ayjay

I bought the FlY More kit so got 2x extra batteries and the 3 way charger plus a handy carry case.

I had about 10-15 mins in the air and battery was abou 45% remaining but it was a little bit windy.

Am looking for other places to venture out tomorrow if the weather allows.

@t6blo. Personally I made a conscious decision not to buy the Fly More kit, the main reason being that I just didn't like the look of the bag. That said, I can understand why it makes real economic sense given the price of just buying the three batteries.

Good video mate, toying with the idea of drone too. Just don't know if I will get the use out of it and it will just be a fad.

Story of my life mate :)

I have 'fads' every week - I waste loads of money on these 'fads' when I realise I didn't really 'need' one, get bored and sell it for a loss.

But it is the only way to scratch the itch.

Keep an eye on the classifieds shortly

@t6blo. I think it's called 'Big Boys Toys Syndrome'!

One of these days, I must get around to trying the video capability video been a function of most digital cameras for years but I've never really felt the need to use it. When I was working, I became an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) and although I wasn't exactly a pro photographer, it did form a large part of the job. I also had a lot of professional training and access to the very best kit available but only ever used video when I absolutely had to for the task in hand. Maybe one one these days, I'll try out the dark side!

Always back there with pleasure Llanberis.

I'm the same - stills are my thing, but thought I would dabble with video. I keep forgetting the drone can take stills - must try harder!
