Problems with Teahupoo?

Essentially, no.

Only voluntary schemes like the NCC scheme.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, but welcome to the forum.
Thank you.

Its a shame that there is only a voluntary quality scheme available - customers need to be protected a bit more really, especially from a health and safety point of view

Good evening to all, I had a VW T6 van converted by Teahupoo 2019/2020 and have had lots of issues with it , has anyone else had an issue with a Teahupoo van or am I just unlucky ?
Only just seen these threads after 2.5 years of continuous problems. The roof blew open on the way home because a strut had blown and the front latches didn’t hold. The roof bed has been replaced once already because the strut fell out and we discovered it was about 4 inches out of line with the other side and leather work was damaged. This strut has now fallen out again last weekend and there is nothing to screw it into. We needed a replacement fridge after about 6 weeks use altogether. Internal panels weren’t fixed, the electrics are shoddy, the Wi-Fi router was not connected properly with no arial attached (router company very kindly sorted that out), some untreated paintwork, all in all a very shoddy van and they were very upset that I called it a Friday afternoon job!

You are not alone. We encountered problems with our van from the moment we collected it from Teahupoo - approx 3 years ago. We have needed a full re-wire, a new water tank, new heater, and we are currently experiencing problems with our pop-top roof. Generally is there a safety kitemark or recognised quality standard that converters should adhere to?
There are no mandatory standards, other than where con and use regs are a consideration.

NCC accreditation is not freely given and is hard to earn so is a fairly decent indicator of a quality product. There are only 6 or 7 such van converters in the UK and being new to the scene I stuck with only NCC builders when choosing my own van to reduce the chances of having my pants pulled down.

Even fewer are VCA approved, and fewer still, have both NCC and VCA tickets.

ISO 9001 doesnt directly relate to the build, but shows they make some effort to be consistent with processes, parts supply, document management, safety certification for appliances, etc.

Hi Tracey, did you take your van back to them to correct the work and if so did they do it to your satisfaction?

I’m currently deciding what to do about my latest issue. There’s a whole lot more I’d like to say about this company but it’s probably best to say nothing until I’ve decided.

They put a new roof bed in after repairing the roof struts twice but most of the other work we sorted ourselves as the owner was very difficult to deal with, blamed us and said he had never had any of the problems before. I understand that the company had now ceased trading so you will end up having to go elsewhere. We again need to get our roof bed sorted as currently cannot use it as it is hanging off. The struts are screwed in and we have been told that screwing is not strong enough and they need to be bolted right through the bed. Atheistically the van is lovely but it has been an expensive nightmare to sort out. The first problem we had was driving home on the motorway on my own and the main roof strut went off like a pistol and the roof wouldn’t close. They told us we hadn’t closed it properly but they were the ones that put it down before we left!!!!!! Good luck getting sorted.

According to Companies House the company was voluntarily dissolved in May 2024. As such I’ve been advised that I’ve no legal recourse regarding the ongoing problems with my conversion which they’ve already had one unsuccessful attempt at resolving - and in any case such was the poor quality of work I’ve decided to bite the bullet and pay a reputable company.

Using this company was literally the worst decision I’ve ever made. They are still active and using the same Facebook page they’ve used all along so for anyone thinking of getting work done by them PM me and I’ll send you some photographs showing the quality of the work you might encounter before you decide.

Same here, we used a great company to fix all the problems at a rather hefty cost, but have much more confidence in the van now… until the next issue

I hate that they’re getting away with it but sometimes you’ve got to know when to cut your losses.

Absolutely. We pass them every week, advertising their new venture and I struggle to let it go, but we have to :(

So glad I decided not to go with them!
When I was researching for a converter, one of their first vans featured in a magazine, and it looked pretty good. They are close to me, but only seemed to have the one layout with an option on the trim. This layout (the standard one) wasn’t what I wanted, so I ended up with Exploria in Brighouse quite a bit further away.

We liked the layout, no complaints there and really liked the demo van but the sheer negligence of the actual conversion almost defied belief. At least two of the first batch of problems when we initially returned the van were downright dangerous - which they did rectify but it should never have happened in the first place.

You dodged a bullet there.

Today I wanted to tidy some of the mess the wiring was still in. I’d already returned the van in February due to numerous faults some of which were downright dangerous - including the state of the electrics eg no fuses at all protecting 2 x 110AH batteries.

Fuses were fitted - one on the pos cable link to the second battery, but still nothing on the positive terminal with the rest of the connections.

Worse still I found this

And this

The terminal post was so damaged battery acid leaked out when I tilted the battery which I had to do to remove it.

So now I need new batteries, and have removed all of the wiring (unprotected battery positive cable was cable tied to the gas pipe!) so I can do a proper job.

The ongoing saga of the leaking squeaking poorly fitted (and damaged) pop top is being completely replaced next month by a (hopefully) reputable company.

These people are still converting using the same website and Facebook page they used before voluntarily winding the company up - which I’m told is why I have no legal recourse.

They aren’t fit to convert a doll’s house. Seriously.

Is that silicone they have used to attach the positive wires to the battery terminal?

You mean in the first photo? No it’s corrosion - the clip on terminal (which was loose) was full of corrosion, half of the battery post was eaten away / missing.

Or thinking about it has it been shorted? Looks like molten lead in the second photo…

Which wouldn’t be surprising seeing as all of the cables (pos and neg) were red! The top photo was actually the negative terminal.

Very useful information - thank you

We had a similar issue with the struts so you are not the only ones at all

Website still live too

I’m paying to get the whole pop top roof replaced in a couple of weeks. This thing leaks, creaks, there’s an issue with the struts and it’s actually damaged in two places - which was conveniently hidden by the rubber sealing strips
