[Resolved] Renogy problem - BMS drift, 100%-0%-100%

Morning reading 66.1% Dc-dc50s battery led green and solar panel led flashing red boost charging. Disconnected everything and fitted BM2. Wired everything back up - yellow battery led on. Selected BM2 app and checked alternator charging ok (is there a different setting for Lithium?)
Switched ac-dc charger on- (red led). when dc-dc50 app showed 75% the yellow led (dc-dc50s). switched to green the red led on the charger switched to green. Does the battery need a serious talking to, and if so, how?

@Dellmassive , I know this is sorted now but am I right in saying that the temperature sensor shouldn't be used on this type of battery?

the DC-DC charger , temp sensor should be used for all types . .

with SLA battery's its used for charge temp coefficient ( ups the voltage when cold)

and with Lifepo4 its used to LOW TEMP charge blocking. ( incase you have a battery who BMS doesnt have that feature)

Here we have Solar trickling into the leisure battery (100W panel, miserable grey wet day). Even on a bright day, the battery records fewer input amps than the charger. No load on the battery other than parasitic drain from heater controller, and a USB port with nothing plugged in.

I never manage to catch it charging from the alternator. There is ignition live at the charger (measured with voltmeter) but it insists on trickling in from the solar, rather than filling the battery from the alternator on the long drive back from Wales yesterday.

Lights on the charger show blue indicating Li setting, Green or yellow indicating charge state of leisure battery, solid red for solar charge, and slow flash red for charging starter battery or off when charging leisure from solar.

Battery has fused connections to load and charger, and direct connection to 240V charger.

Apologies for untidiness around Renogy, I had to move various VW connections out of the way to get to the port for the Bluetooth. No impact on the power connections.

nice install that . . .

so it looks to me like the battery is 47% soc. . .

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

the charger is showing BULK. . . (green) so requesting full charge. . .

the battery is 13.5v (red) - so ready to take more charge.

but the engine charge shows 0A (yellow) so not charging from engine at that time.

but is showing the starter battery voltage at 12.6v (blue) - so its seeing the starter battery.

and you can see that the charger is trickle charging at 8W from solar - (pink)

from the above its shows battery around 50%,

engine is OFF,

and solar is very poor, so cloudy or dark.

+++++++++++

can you do another screen shot with the engine running?

and as you say . . from the histrory it looks like you are charging. . .

these red traces seem to show engine charging.

and the green show very low solar charging . .

Thanks @Dellmassive , yes, it was very cloudy when I took those! Van up at the compound at the moment, so I’ll get some more engine running and settings later. I have to confess I’ve only just found the settings screen in the app!

The state of charge was showing 75% and less, even at 14.2 V - similar to @Periscope007

I see, I think I had read this in my manual and got confused.

yeh. . . different revisions on the Renogy install guide.

that says dont use, but depends on what BMS and battery you have. . . in any case it wont matter or hurt anything.

with lifepo4 setting it will just block charge to the house battery if the temp drops below 0degC.

so no problems. . .

FWIW: i run the dc50S, with lithium, and havent get the temp sensor plugged in currently. . . the only difference if the battery temp metric defaults to 25degC fixed.

sure. . .

will if the battery is at 14.2v and taking less that 1.0A charge - then it is fully charged.

and the BMS should reset to 100%.

if it doesnt, you can run the battery dead flat till it switches off . . . that will reset to 0%.

then do a full 100% recharge from EHU.

that will reset any BMS battery drift.

Parked up the solar has more or less filled the Li battery, showing 14.2 - 14.3 V, although only 48% SOC. Engine running screenshot and settings shown. I know I need to run Li right down to reset SOC, but since it is unreliable anyway I don’t see a need to do that, and I’ll use battery V. If I didn’t have the app, and just a voltmeter, I’d be blissfully happy!

agreed . . looks like battery is full.

id still reset the battery anyway.

its an easy fix.. . just disable the charge sources and run it flat with loads.

then should reset to 0% . .

then hopefully back to 100% next recharge.

thing like this mess with my SOC OCD - i wouldn't be happy until the SOC read right.
