Rodent damage

So van is in at local main dealer and I'm £700 lighter!

Needs a sump sensor wiring loom, ad blue injector, various clips and connectors and 3 hours labour.

Saying that, the van ran sweet when taking it to the dealer and although only 7 miles away, the fuel range dropped by 70! Probably needs fixed I guess.

Asked if the wires can be soldered back together as still have the parts but no - not the way they do things apparently. Main dealers for you!

Not happy....damn vermin!!!

Bear in mind the damaged plug in the photo was probably 2 minutes work for Ratty.
The thing is, you pay for the repairs, and they could do it again tomorrow, and again and again....
what (seriously) can be done to stop them? Any ideas? (real ones :) )
One is not to lay the camper up for winter but to keep using it throughout while vermin are looking for somewhere warm.

My VTR thou in the avatar had a mouse nest in the air filter, chewed up paper, cardboard, plastic, anything. And they'd chewed right through it so there is no doubt that nest crap got sucked into the cyclinders. Fortunately the only wiring they chewed was the alarm.

I read somewhere that rodents don’t like the smell of diesel so one option is spray the underneath with diesel. Not sure how long it would last in the rain. Thing is I don’t like the smell of diesel either do not sure if want the exterior stinking of diesel.

Rat traps?????
They prefer food to car parts.

Stick some cheddar to the chassis of the car parked in front of and behind you. Dirt cheap and no dead mices.

My wife parks her car by the canal and rats started have a go at insulation. I sprayed with WD40 and problem went away.

Foxes have chewed the cables underneath my van for the second time. Assuming it was a bad oil sensor the first time, I took it for what I thought would be an obvious 'warranty' repair. It cost me £200 to have 6 cables (badly) spliced! Therewere around 20 cables this time, so I did it myself. Most cables were an obvious match, but some weren't and I can't identify which components they feed, in order to check my connections against the wiring diagram. Ultimately, everything is working again, but the engine light still on and I don't know why. If I post images can anyone help with component i/d please?

It’s tricky to see exactly what’s what in your photos but in general if you have only two wires and they are the same colour it’s normally not important, most sensors/switches are switching a negative signal so two brown cables (or a brown and a brown striped cable) is common

regards the engine light some faults auto reset and some do not so depends what faults you have logged, you could do with a scan and a reset of the van, if you dont have access to VCDS get yourself a Carista unit, it’s basic but will read and reset all your fault codes

Thanks Pauly, that's really helpful info. I was just researching VCDS, so great to know that a basic Carista unit is all I need to have a look and reset.
