Side Bars or Side Boards?

Bumping my old post, as on Saturday I noticed a bulge so thought best check - see attached photo's - think they've gone past the rusty stage - as you'll see a large hole!

Still contemplating Side Steps - however as above "On a practical note as they protrude are they prone to kerb damage etc?". Just after thoughts/experiences please. Or do they sit high enough that this doesn't happen?

Look at Post 11 on this thread - just looks to me that if you were to park closer to the kerb there's a chance of catching the running boards

Would also welcome any pictures (particularly Candy White Van) of those who have them on their van, as above I have looked but not too many out there...

Thanks in advance

Wow that’s unreal, how long have they been on your van. I have recently taken my 3 1/2 year old bars off and they are solid. Can’t say that for the fittings though, seized in place. Had to snap the bolts off.

4 years to the day they've been on. That hole is a good 6 inches long - literally crumbled and lots more would come away if I apply slight force - not doing that as concerned whole thing might just snap off!

Odd isn't is - I know others have reported rust but to go like that takes some doing. On a few occasions I've taken the van to the local car wash - they spray it with some acidic cleaner no doubt - but given its then washed off can't see that would do the damage - but can't think of what else would. I wash it myself now...

Seems a good idea and something to consider. Perhaps mine were a rogue bunch - sort of expect some rust due to chips etc but not a hole literally size of my hand!

Love your colour as well.

Thanks

Hi, has anyone got recommendations for fixed external side steps for a T6, I’ve got sportline style ones but would be good to have an actual step there to aid getting in & out.

Seen some aluminium ones but wonder how strong they are?

Cheers

There are these suggestions (I’ve moved your post here as there’s an existing thread on it):
We have a difference of opinion on the sidesteps. Which one do you guys all prefer?

I have these to help my daughter.
Mounts in factory holes.
But this is something to consider if you’re not a twin-slider:
Do you have twin sliders? I think side steps look stupid where there is no door.

I’m choosing between either round side bars, or round side bars with steps.

Are the steps large enough to be usable? Or is it more just a styling thing?

Load bearing had them on van for 3 years no bending yet can get good leverage from front half of foot to climb into van.

Hi all.

I am buying mods for my van, wheels and side steps.

Any suggestions/ recommended supplier?

I’ve just put the Transporter HQ trapezoidal side bars on - easy to fit, very nice quality and look great.

I was thinking of getting a side step instead of side board, I thought it might add some protection from being doored by other car users

I am looking to get the side steps as opposed to side bars ! However I was told by camperking their and most other on the market are mainly cosmetic type as you can’t actually step onto them when entering or exiting the van?
I was rather surprised is there any side steps or running board which actually stipulate their weigh specs ?
