Snow and ice performance of T6

@Bedtime Glad your happy with your 4motion, the thing that put me off was not budget or the extra fuel costs but the fact you are limited to 6omph on a dual carriageway whereas I can sit legally at 70mph all day, for me that is more convenient.
Mojo,

I need educating.....why is the 4motion limited to 60mph on duel carriageways?
Cheers
Dan

The speed limit for a panel van on a dual carriageway is 60mph, a Kombi can do 70mph as long as it has an unladen weight of less than 2040KG. All the 4motion models being heavier are over this so can legally only do 60mph. Caravelle and California models can all do 70mph as classed differently. @David Levett @Caravellet6 :)
Sorry Mojo, just seen the other post.

I'll stick my neck out and say I think our Vel Exec 4motion is the best car in the world ever........., and with Nokian all-season tyres and a diff lock, in the last round of snow it has been even more impressive. Love it, love it....Love it

Just answering the questions guys, @Bedtime @David Levett facts are facts.. Quite a few people on here have been issued tickets by mobile roadside cameras then had to send copies of vehicle docs to have them cancelled by proving they could legally do that speed. Just trying to help:thumbsup:

what winter tyres are you running - need to get some for my Devonports
I have Nokians on my spare set of winterDavenports. Very impressed both over the last week's weather but also in Austria when skiing. Took the hills & snow no problem. Did not have to use my snow chains or snow socks at all this year.

That is a risk I’m happy to live with. I rarely get stopped and I imagine only the nerdiest jobsworth of traffic officers would know this fact.

IT's the cameras that get you not a jobsworth :-(

I've just driven my new to me vw transporter t32 up to braemar. To be honest the snow was minimal. But the van couldn't handle it. I'm surprised as I had no probs in my old t26. Basically the skiddy sign lit up on the dashboard and I kept coming to a standstill. Meanwhile cars happily drove past me. What's going on? The van is only a year old. The tyres are practically brand new. Not a happy bear!

I drove my T32 in heavy snow around Snowdonia back in November. Fortunately I had just swapped over to my winter wheels and tyres.

'twas extremely sure footed in those conditions.

Summer tyres in winter conditions will never be a good mix.

Not impressed at all. My car would have driven better. Like I said other cars were zooming past me! I've never required winter tyres driving for 30 years in Scotland. Worried about getting from braemar to aboyne tomorrow to meet with converter. If this is a tyre problem then be should be ashamed of the poor quality

I’ve got the Continentals on my van at the moment and will be tackling some snow in the French Alps this weekend, I’ve got chains in case things do get bad. I’ve also got some steel wheels with All Season tyres, is it worth putting them on?

I ask because All Season are not proper winter tyres so is there any point? If it does get bad it’s fairly quick to put the chains on.

I just back from France in my previous boxer based motorhome. I believe it is now illegal to drive in france/ austria during winter without proper winter tyres ie snowflake marked. As I had to rush out at last minute to buy some. Got some from blackcircle when no one else had my size.

I live in the Highlands and have been using all season tyres for the last few years on car and van. Prior to that I used to swap winter/summer wheels but the all season tyres are almost as good as the winters I used to use.
When the tyres stop working a pair of Autosocks in boot is the failsafe backup plan but I have used them more often for practice than in anger.

If you keep an eye on the for sale section you might get lucky and snag a set of Devonports with all season tyres, they often go for what the tyres would cost.

One thing i think that is a slight weakness on the transporters (going back 15 years to T5s !) is the overzealous traction control programme, the slightest bit off slip and power is wiped out in a massive over compensation making some slopes impassible !

Totally agree, traction control switch is very useful in the snow.

I will be selling a set of Nokian weatherproof on a set of 18 ats alloys, both wheels and tyres load rated for a t32. Just need to get my backside in gear, get them given a good clean and check the tread depths if any interest. Wheels are in excellent condition.
