Spare wheel choice…..

I’m putting a spare wheel bracket on the rear doors.

I have Fuel Zephyr 17’s with Falken Wildpeaks.

The price for one of these wheels is going to be about £300 minimum.

So, I’m thinking of buying a tuff torque steel wheel as the spare. Which will be much cheaper.

Will it look shit having a different type of spare wheel?

Yes, I’ll have to carry a spare set of wheel bolts for the spare.

Is the steel wheel heavier or lighter than the alloy Zephyr?

Don’t be concerned about offending me, honest answers are needed on this one….

Very little point spending a lot of money on a "nice" wheel that you may never use, or if you do only for a few days while you get a tyre repaired.

I've got the VW 18" Palmerston but slung under the back is a standard steel (now with extra hammerite)

If it's on view you maybe want to choose something a little nicer looking.

What may sway you to a matching wheel is if you plan extended trips where you need to rely on a specific tyre. Then you might want to leave the wheel on longer, or instead have a spare with an identical tyre size on (then you can always get a local tyre place to swap the tyre if you need to)

If by the time you've got one that looks nice it's not that much cheaper than just have the same, maybe get the same. Then you've always got a spare matching wheel in case you curb/pot holes one badly.

This one?

If so I think, if looks are all important , then it’s a no from me. Would look fine if your van wheels were the same but visually the differences are quite noticeable.

I can see the appeal cost wise though. And personally I’d be fretting about the spare getting pinched if it were a pricey one hanging on the back - but mines parked on the street 24/7 when not in use.

If it were me I’d go for a cheap one and a cover over it. Might not be the pathetic you want though as you have a great looking van.

My 18" Steel Wheels look very similar. Think their may be a few manufacturers producing very similar but with slightly different off set.

My steel spare is up on the tailgate.

When it goes in for a new tyre (to make the outside diameter match the larger alloys) I'm having it powder coated in a hammered black finish. I want to to look like a spare, but not tatty and manky.

I’d be putting the same tyre on the spare that are on the van at the moment so should I need to, I can run it for as long as is needed.

The tuff torque is 40mm offset, the zephyrs are 39mm, so almost identical.

Spare hanging off the back would have locking nuts fitted.

What size tyre ?

Ok. Makes sense.
So I’m being thick……
The standard spare wheel is 17x7 according the Google, so I could use it with a Falken Wildpeak fitted, essentially gives me the same size as what I have on the Van.

I guess this larger tyre means it won’t fit under the van?

A new spare is only £75 which I could then powder coat black.

My spare is the standard 16 inch. Mind you, mine was a Shartline with Business Pack, so maybe 17s on Highlanderlines...?

Im not sure you'd fit much bigger, diameter wise, under the van, although I've no personal experience there.

But you spare matches your main wheels. 😂
Looks good.
Where does one find a GP Steel?

Be careful if you have 'directional' tyres, (my CC2's are directional) make sure your spare is non directional. I don't carry a spare any more, unless we are off on a long trip and I will carry my non directional tyre spare wheel on a tow bar mounted Bak Rak. For every local eventuality, there's GreenFlag.

That's not my van but it looked good so I took a pic ;).
Ebay, Facebook, Gumtree...can usually turn up a GP steelie without much trouble.
Just search t5 steel wheels 17
And don't buy one that's too rusty in the crevice between the rim and basket of the wheel otherwise you'll be forever having to repaint it when the rust shows again and again .Cheap as chips !

This is the spare wheel size

So I could powder coat it Matt black and fit a 225/75/16 fallen wildpeak for almost exactly the same size as the zephyrs.

Surely a 6.5J wheel is too thin for a 225 tyre to be safe under load? 'Adge' the manager from Kwik Fit (next door to us in Birmingum) has just been in and said 'don't do it'! But they are Kwik Fit of course...
