So... I'm looking to protect the spare wheel.... I've read a fair few posts on here and seem to have come to the conclusion that the 'spare safe' locking system is considered a decent deterrent and will slow the feral youth of today down....

sparesafe.jpg

Probably a bit more expensive compared to other locking devices on the market, but it seems decent quality, and i don't mind paying a bit more for quality if i'm only shelling out the once....

But what else do i need to do to protect the wheel itself from rusting...?

Is there a spare wheel cover for the T6...?

Blimey, it's not the most attractive thing dangling under a T6 is it
I'm glad my wheel is inside my van.

Yes, maybe its worth painting it stealth black... Let the feral delinquents get on their hands and knees before realising that its going to be a job getting the bugger off...!

I'm thinking maybe powder coating the spare would be one option for anti-rust protection...

I have one of those lock shields. Decent bit of kit. I painted mine a different colour as I didn't like the red with the yellow sticker.

Once done, the hinge pin end needs some attention, what to do there I need to have a look, not sure how easy that will be to sort?

All a bit pointless if it still uses the standard 3 pin locking bolt as they are very easily undone and if someone wants it they will come back.

I unscrewed mine using a tight fitting socket hammered over a bit of cloth.

Hi all

First post here, picked up a T6 the other day. The spare wheel is very vulnerable, I'd like to fit a locking bolt that can't be removed with molgrips

There was one available, with a shroud, in the forum shop but that's now gone. There is another but it's a pretty big, ugly red thing. Would prefer the one with the spinning shroud. Does anyone know where these can be purchased from please?

Thanks!

That's the standard locking bolt though, a good pair of molgrips and some time could get that off. There was one available which had a shroud round it to stop molgrips getting into it. Locking wheel bolts with the spinning collar are potentially too short to fit

The sparesafe, even though it's bigger and uglier than I'd like!, is probably what I'll end up getting (SpareSafe – T5/T6 Cali Spare Wheel lock (inc Security Bolt))

I still have stock of the ones from the forum shop, send me a pm and you can pay with PP and will get it sorted for you

@Dilbert - thanks for following up. I didn’t think those shrouds spun, I thought they were just covers that sat over the bolts

@Pauly - I thought I’d done this (by starting a conversation) but perhaps I’d got this wrong...? What’s the best way to do this please? Alternatively please could you message me and i’ll reply right back. PP waiting

Just a warning.
Had my spare wheel stolen in broad daylight, had a locking wheel bolt device fitted. Like the one below -

Looks like molegrips were used, as no damage, just locking bolt missing!
Only away from van for 1/2 and hour, so obviously not a great security device.

I bought something similar from Pauly but to be honest I couldn’t really work out what to do with it and so haven’t fitted it yet. Or even looked to see if the wheel is still there!

If you want a steel replacement I have 3 16” wheels with 1k mile tyres. If it wasnt for a screw in a sidewall I’d have 4!!

Yes one of those would be better Loz.
Just may cause more damage if they are really determined to get the spare off.

Sorry to hear that, but as mentioned many times you need a sparesafe;

Hi @Loz ...the sparesafe is available from Campervanbits which seams to be part of VW Californiaclub.com can we as T6 members get this at a discount ...or do you know where else you can purchase from.......next question it can be purchased with or without the lock bolt, as I’ve already got the VW locking bolt will need the complete kit ( with bolt)
Ps the Amazon link is same company
cheers. ;)
