It wasnt the best option i ticked. There was some confusion at the time about whether there would be a spare wheel carrier if i didnt have an alloy spare. The steely went back, so i will get a 2nd hand one with a worn tyre for a spare, the alloy underneath is only temporary- probably very temporary if it gets nicked..

Hi all,
As per title some scumbag stole the spare wheel while it was parked in a public car park this afternoon.
Reported it to the police and got a crime number but how much is a replacement?
Is it worth going through insurance to replace it.
Any tips you can share with the best way to proceed please?
Thanks all...
P.s. It's a T32 with the basic steels, never even looked at it so not sure if its a steel or space saver etc. etc.

Bloody scumbags. That's it, definitely going to invest in a more robust locking mechanism for it.

Sorry to hear this. Check out the forum shop for a locking bolt and I would buy one if I was you rather than claim on insurance.

I'm going to get a secondhand wheel, with a just legal tyre on it. Hopefully they will see its not worth stealing.

They are not stealing it for the tyre, so I'm told. It's the 17inch rim they are after.

Sorry to hear that Pezzas...
I ordered a lock from here yesterday - now I just have to try to keep hold of the wheel until it arrives.

I've got 3 spare steel wheels with legal tyres (not worth nicking but good condition) in for sale thread £25 each 16" genuine vw transporter
got one under mine :)

I'm going to order the lock from the forum shop........mine is a standard steel spare. I'm gonna sound like a proper lazy tw*t now but does anyone know what length bolt to go for? I've seen mention of different bolt lengths......is that because some come with an alloy spare? Most of the stolen ones will probably end up on fleabay!!!! B*stards!!!!!!!

You'd think the manufacturers would help us out here and fit a robust lock......but then again they wouldn't get to sell as many replacements would they......or am I just an old cynic?!

Mine has arrived and been fitted.
One point to note. There are 2 bolts holding the spare and as you look at the rear of the van the left most one does not come right out, It undoes all the way but the end of the bolt looks bigger and so did not come out when I only undid the one.
50/50 chance and I chose the wrong one to start with - typical.

According to VW the bolts are listed as short for steel spare and long for alloy but my T32 kombi has a steely spare with a long bolt, we havent sold any short ones yet if that helps, i think the longer bolt will do either just needs a bit more screwing if you could have got away with a shorty

that must mean the plastic shroud will be shorter for the steel wheel so it tightens up more hence shorter bolts
my caravelle came with an alloy wheel and my steel spare flops about so i had to pack it with old car mats
i will look at shortening the plastic bits unless anyone knows any different

;)
