T6.1 Horn location and replacement

Ok... so I've just swapped the crap horn for a Stebel Nautilus... the 2021 multivan is different from the California to access the original horn turn the wheels full left undo 2 x T25 hex screws along with what looks like a flat button fold the wheel arch cover back and with a13 mm spanner remove horn off bracket.. cut wires and join to new horn along with relay.. here's a great YouTube vid on how to wire it

What's the verdict on your horn, thinking of doing the same on my T6.1 campervan, the current one sounds pathetic to be honest. Where did you order it from?

Excellent video, definitely need to add a relay if using either twin horns or an air horn as the current draw can be quite a bit more than the standard clown horn

I have ordered one as well, it should be arriving soon. Speaking to my friend about it, he was surprised that it need a relay considering its 12v. Did you also install in-line fuse as per video? I thought that it would be a straight wire swop from the existing one into this new one?

@Pauly, can you please shed some light onto the above. Would a relay be required considering that a replacement horn Stebel Nautilus is also 12v?

I would say no, the only purpose of a relay is if you are planning to fit something way over powered that could not be fed from the original horn wiring, in this case you would wire a new supply through a relay and use the horn feed as a relay trigger

Thank you very much for your reply. I am having a dizzy moment here, so you a saying that I do NOT need a relay in this instance as this new horn is also 12v. Simply unplug the existing and reconnect the terminals onto this new horn. Am I understanding this correctly?

Yes that is exactly what i would do

If the new horn is much higher powered than the old one (which it almost certainly wont be) then you would need to consider a beefier supply and a relay

Aha, ok then. A supply cable from the battery with addition of a relay then?

This is more complicated than I thought

Lets reverse again, just looked at the fuse charts and wiring diagrams and it looks like it is fed from fuse SC36 which is 30A (please double check) and wired in 2.5mm cable so should be good for 18A

2.5mm thinwall cable is rated for 28A

Mine is T6.1 if that makes any difference?

I did put a relay on mine just to be on the safe side though if the cable is 2.5mm I might have got away without one. Though there seems to lots of excuses to use it a lot recently!

I still have the original horn unit on the van and find that knocking with my knuckles on the inside of my windscreen works just as effectively. Fitting a louder horn unit is defo on my to do list.

Just ordered the same horns as @Californication69

I don't intend on fitting an additional relay (based on @Pauly's comments on the existing wiring and fuse capacity) but should I access the horn via the driver side wheel arch? @Californication69 seems to have accessed the horn from underneath the vehicle.
Which is easiest? Does anyone have a video on how to get access to the existing horn?

As a side comment - Wouldn't it be great if the forum allowed mp4 videos to be uploaded?

It would but videos take up a huge amount of space and we would outgrow our webserver on a monthly basis !
I am committed to hosting images locally to preserve the forum threads forever but videos are a step too far

Yes I drove up a levelling chock and got in underneath. I’ll be doing it again in 2 weeks time when I collect the 4M Black Pearl ahhhhh Haaaaa Jim Lad.
Dosent need a relay. Wear a thick long sleeved item to stop the arms rubbing when you pulling apart the plastic bits.
I had to bend the metal horn bracket a bit to get the T25 ( I think, !) onto the torx bolt.
But it’s all doable from under zee knees
