Just having a mooch under the bonnet looking at headlight access to swap bulbs (not decided which ones yet). How do you get into the drivers side one? Airbox in the way? Is there an easy method?

What you need is a lad with a bit of knowledge and smaller hands than a bunch of bananas thats how i changed mine

I just removed the top half of the air box to get access, much easier.

Remove the 2 air flow sensor plugs (they don't just pull off, there is a catch you need to release to allow them to be pulled off)
Slacken large jubilee clip
Flip up the couple of catches that attach the top half of the air box to the bottom
With a bit of jiggling, the top half of the air box will come off. DON'T force it, it is tight but will come out.
You will then get good access to the bulb cover and lamp.

Hope this helps!

Wow...
First drive in the dark last night and it was an eye-opener. Literally - I had my eyes wide open trying to see where I was going

Definately need to do something about the lights - I think getting new bulbs is the first step.

You would think in this day and age VW would fit a headlight as standard that is suitable and up to the job for today's driving conditions instead they fit lights that are about about the same light output as my mark 1 escort from the 70s and charge you an extra 1200 pounds for upgrades. That i possibly would have paid if i knew how bad they were On saying this the t4 headlights were bad but easily fixed with a extra wiring loom for 40 quid and different bulbs somebody soon must come up with an upgrade surely

I fitted Ring +120% xenon bulbs and they are an improvement, but only a mild one so don't expect miracles.

there's been a lot of talk on here about the headlights.....I took it all with a pinch of salt......blah, blah, blah......yeh, whatever! That was until I began use them as filthy winter nights set in.......and then I thought, ah, I know what they're talking about now......they're very poor. My god, the bi xenon's in my old 2001 beemer were a quantum leap better! Would I have paid the extra if I'd ordered it from the factory........no. Too much money. I'll get some better bulbs fitted. I'll just accept it as a cheap skate corner cutting (profit increasing) tactic! They obviously meet whatever euro standard is in force......but let's face it.....the bloody manufacturers, not the euro bureaucrats set those standards!

Considering it ATM, wiring plug is a bit different but pretty minor, looking around £400 for the units and bits to do it but still investigating ??

Would I be right in saying that in normal dipped mode, the H4 and H7 lights will be of similar performance and it is only on full beam when the benefit of the H7 set up in having a second reflector (where the drl's are in H4 model) will be obvious?
Or is even the dipped reflector shape completely different in the H7 model?

I have started to use the fog light when i am without street lights. They make a great improvement close up diving at about 40 MPH and i dont think they will dazzle as they are the cornering lights and designed to be on with on coming traffic.I still have the standard bulbs so might up grade to the ones recommended on here.My ford custom fogs dazzled but that had corning lights up with the other lights and they would shine in car windows when in two lane on roundabouts.

I´ve got the twin H7 units and they perform very well. I find the low beam to be quite good in the dark. But when turning on high beam its impressive to see how the light up.
I´ll replace the bulbs with Philips White Vision bulbs too see if its better.

I've driven a fair bit this weekend, much of it at night.
Main beam with H7s is definitely fine. Low beam could be better but it okay; just make sure you set them as high as possible.

I've also noticed that whatever white lights Mercedes is currently using (LEDs I presume) for headlights is hatefully glaring when driven towards you.

That never occurred to me......when I get the van back, I'll check the headlight position!

There are some very simple H7 HID conversion kits on the market, why not upgrade just the high beams?

Did it on Mrs Loz's previous smart and they were amazing.
