T6 Bulbs & Lamps

I would have paid for LED lights if I'd known how bad the standard H4s were. The standard lights on my 12 year old Subaru were fine so I just assumed the standard lights on a modern expensive van would be fine too :)
What is your Subaru? We have a 2006 Outback (2.5SE petrol); great country lane car!

My wife learned to drive in her dads new Impreza Turbo wagon. I drove it a few times and loved it!
Our Outbacks lights are okay, our BM ones are outstanding (xenon; the new ones have LEDs but are apparently not as bright).

I find they are not good but way better than my transit custom sport .
I will be happy to sign up.
I think they give a good spread of light to the left and right but because of the limit of light from the bulbs the over light is low . My ford had projector lenses with halogen bulbs and they could only give two good bright rings of light in front on the road but would not light the sides . I drive across the new forest every day and with horses and cattle loses on the roads it was not good .I have fitted the philips white bulbs to the t6 and they help a lot. I am not sure what they could do with them apart from focus them more to one point on the road but that would not be good for my use. Back when is was young we used to fit driving light to are old fords that would work with the dipped beam for more light but i haven't seen this sort of thing for years.
If you haven't given the fog a go try that i find it helps .

But you shouldn't HAVE to spec them to get proper lights.
On a top end Highline (or Sportline), lights so poor is just not on.
This is the key point.
Whether you think 1600 quid is a fair price or not. The point is, on a 30 grand van, lights that don't light where you're going or where you want to reverse it's a joke.

Yep LEDS are brill i agree But standard lights on a 30G van should be more than good enough! I would be doing the same as you if had not had the luxury of speccing LEDS.
IMO if there not good enough to drive with there not fit for purpose and i would insist on them being upgraded by vw. Best start rattling there cage !!

My own thoughts on this is that VW probably wouldn't admit to them not being 'fit for purpose', but a good resolution imo would be a heavily discounted price to upgrade to H7's. Again, wishful thinking, but if sufficient people showed displeasure, it may yield results

Have any of you tried H7 units? If anyone wants to try mine, you're welcome to; you just need to be in North Cornwall!
Maybe something scientific would help? A light meter recording output in lumens then compare H4s and H7s but also compare a T5.1 standard light to see if they've got worse.

There must be a minimum output required by law?

It's rather off that VW are more or less "forcing" buyers to upgrade to £1600 LED headlights.

Are the H7 worth the upgrade over the standard H4 or do you really need to upgrade to LED to get a difference?

I picked up a courtesy van today and randomly it is equipped with H7 headlights so looking at testing this out while i have it.
I am thinking i will get some internal/external night time shots in set locations car parks/facing walls etc and then take the exact same shots when i get my van back and see how the pics compare

Ideal!

Our bubble will very quickly be burst if the H7's turn out to be worse than the H4's

I understand what you say but i had LEDS because i go to work in the dark and come home in the dark along unlit roads, 6 months of the year so the upgrade benefits me greatly, if i only used the van occasionally at night i would not have bothered for the cost. On a personal basis if i like you, find the standard lights no good enough , i would keep on until they were sorted to your satisfaction . Hopefully to shut you up they will do something about them. As you say i can't see them saying they're not good but they may sort something out for you personal and others if they put their point across the correct way.

wish i had ordered the LED headlights, but when i ordered my van way back in November 2015
the sales chap didn't know much about all the different options/extras,
Only if i had of waited a few months until more people had the T6,
as they say hindsight, if only!
Will wait for @Pauly to test the H7 and maybe go down that route

I mentioned it in a previous post about it having a positive effect on my fuel economy.......well, in all seriousness......when I was coming home the other night in drizzle, there were times when I really had to slow right down.......not because I drive too fast but because I genuinely wasn't confident I had been seen by other motorists. On one B road where I was behind someone turning right into a side road, a motorist pulling OUT of that side road pulled out on me and I'm convinced it was because he didn't know I was there as I was "masked" by other cars' headlights! If that makes sense? IF I'd had an accident, I'd have stated the headlights were in my opinion a contributory factor! Lets face it, if so many level headed and (probably) mature T6 owners are unhappy about this, then there's a problem! Just a thought.....would it help if we all rang vw customer service with our concerns.......and mention to them that there is a growing dissatisfaction and some safety concerns that will be mentioned on social media? Maybe I'm naive but I think they might be rattled by this......and they need to be! Just my thoughts.

I've been following this thread with interest, simply because I have the LED lights. However, I am actually disappointed with the distance of the light penetration when on dipped beam. Stick them on main beam and they light up the world, however, drop them back to dipped and I don't feel that I can see that far up the road, and have to look really hard to ensure that my eyes can pick everything out. To me it seems that they just don't point high enough. Could it be that because the van is lowered the auto levellers need some form of a reset? I understand from other posts on different things that the levellers are on the sub frame under the van somewhere. Anyone got any ideas and/ or any other LED owner having similar thoughts?

Just raise the beam a tad, the adjuster is on the back of the headlight- two turns with an screwdriver does the trick.

Thanks, I'll take a look when I get it back from the customizer on Monday.

Worth doing mine were set quite low too , makes a big difference as well. In fact it's probably just one full turn, worth doing at night so you can see the beam pattern raise just enough. Theirs also an adjuster for left and right but I'd doubt that'll need moving.

I have had two car new from the main dealers that have the light out of level.
It should be reset if springs are changed or even a bulb.

Guess I'll be taking a trip down to the local MOT station to get them set up properly then.
