Apart from the obvious point, which I will stay away from as it could be seen as politics, who knew that fitting a ladder straight could be so hard?

I think someone has thought far enough to make sure the brackets are level but not far enough to consider they should also be vertically aligned...

I think the spirit level was bob on. Being parked on the kerb when using it was the problem.
