Tailgate no longer opening from outside

My tailgate has just decided to no longer open from the internal switch so I’m now unable to open it unless I push up on the internal gubbins to release it manually .. which is also very stubborn . Is there I fuse to this thing ? It’s seems like a fuse may have gone if not it’s the mechanism itself .. should have made much more of a fuss about this months ago when the problem started of course it was intermittent for the best part of a year … so you get lazy about complaining . I have all in insurance which should cover this but I’m booked in for a service in September and could get it all done in one go .. for now it would be nice to be able to open the tailgate . This is an extremely annoying issue that’s gone on now for far too long . It seems to have started after I got the lower part of my tailgate re sprayed after someone kindly drove into it in a fork lift ... whatever it is not being able to open the gate is a total bitch .

What happens when you try bridging the pins in the blue plug (in the quoted message below)?

Removed rear panel and Bridged small blue plug lifting rod and tailgate opening my question is it the motor or wiring

I have an internal switch which does just that . However I will check it’s still functioning next .. I don’t imagine it can be that .. but I’ll eliminate it next and report back

Yes, just in case it’s both switches.
I don’t know which fuse serves the rear lock, but imagine it’s on the same as the other door locks.
If the above doesn’t change anything then it’s the lock solenoid or the wiring

Just had a fiddle to open the thing manually by pulling out rubber bung and rummaging around with the mechanism and voila the internal switch suddenly works again . PITA ! Great it works for now .. but what the hell is happening … it must be related to the hot spell we are having but how ? It’s a mystery almost a ghost in the machine situation .. a universal energy trying to tell me something thing ! … anyway whatever .. my tailgate external switch is still dead .. but at least I know the mechanism is still working and the electronics are ( relatively ) sound . No fuse blown etc.. on it goes .

Perhaps a pony internal switch or dodgy wiring with the connection?

The switch has been 100% fine for about 18 months at least so I’m thinking the mechanism was jammed somehow as it was totally dead but .. now it’s “alive” ! Whatever it is I wish it would just settle down . I can now open the damn door anyhow and hopefully In sep they will just fit a new micro switch in the handle and this story will come to an end . One thing does anyone know where you can get a replacement switch ? Part number ? Any info ?

Totally agree .. the handle has been re sprayed along with all lower portions of tailgate a few months ago and I’ve been charged for various seals etc that I don’t have the paperwork for right now but they must have had it apart and back together during the work and it’s only been a noticeable issue since the tailgate was done . As they charged me well over £1000 I’m pretty pissed off
Oscan.
Sorry to barge in on this thread… when the VW dealer charged you over a grand for re-spraying your tailgate , was that the whole of the tailgate in a standard colour?

It was the lower half of the panel ( including switch cover ) a nasty bit of edge damage sorted to bottom of gate and yes standard colour .. the job is good you can’t see any joins . But I have to say the switch has only been problematic since the job was done.

there will be a part number on my Barn Door to Tailgate thread.

There will also be one on the part itself, so you can just pop it out and check (in case it’s different to mine, for whatever reason)

Hi all

I have a similar problem with my tailgate not opening from outside but works everytime from internal switch. So I reckon its the switch for external handle which I will replace.

Can someone tell me if I should be able to open the tailgate with the keyfob? Or can this be coded in?

Thanks

So from this it can be coded in, I'll give it a try and see what happens!

Thanks

After a bit advice my tailgate has started playing up when I press button on handle outside the tailgate unlatches as you hear it and it pops open a few mm but that’s it the tailgate won’t open,I tried inside poking my finger in the hole but still couldn’t get it to unlatch open so just pushed on tailgate from outside and it shut heard electrics shut again, tried a few more goes then eventually opened, this can’t be switch related if I’m hearing the electric unlatching noise can it ?
desperate for solution as going on my first road trip in van next week
any help appreciated
thanks
Paul

Hmm interesting … I would first try some decent lubricant spray around the latch mechanism .. tailgate opening issues are a bitch … good luck

Thanks @osman tried for a few days after spray but no better,I ended up fitting a new latch and job fixed and only £32 from local vw garage so not to bad, thank you for your reply and advice it’s appreciated

That’s good to know !

Another Tailgate playing up! 2010 T5.1

In fact mine seems dead, not getting any latching or un-latching noise, and is locked solid.
The outside handle/switch isn’t doing anything.
Thankfully still able to open manually from the inside.
Planning on taking the rear panel off tomorrow and testing all the wires to the lock/switch.

Not sure if it’s a coincidence but this issue coincides with a fault with my tail lights and side door.
-tail lights are coming on with the ignition, I’m working though this, but suspect fault in the BCM
-side door is working but I am getting the door open light on the dash when it’s closed, the light goes out when the doors open. It’s like the latch it wired in reverse, but still locks as it should.
This has been like this for months and started when the BCM was replaced to a 089

Any advice or help with any of these issues would be much appreciated.
