Tracker needed for insurance? or needed for good price?

Hi all,

In the process of having a T6.1 converted (total value once done will be around £57k and looking at build options and will be researching insurance soon.

Just wanted to get a feel of how much a tracker is likely needed to get insurance and/or what annual discount it's likely to add vs without?
Did you have to get one for your insurance? and how much extra would you have paid without one?
And if yes what kind of tracker was required, did it have to be Thatcham T5 / T7? Really just want to work out if it's worth shelling out the near £1k that the device, fitting plus lifetime subscription will add.

If I didn't go with a tracker i'd still be planning to get something like a Disklok plus a wheel clamp I think, i certainly wouldn't go without any extra security, though the van is a highline so comes with an anti-theft alarm for what that's worth too.

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan.

Where insurance is concerned, never say never and never say always, but usually an insurer will either require a tracker be fitted as a condition of cover or they won't be bothered whether one's fitted or not. In my experience, it's unusual for an insurer to offer a discount for having a tracker fitted voluntarily.

I asked the question to Howden when is was renewing last year and was told it would not make any difference to the premium if i had a tracker fitted so i just stuck with the Ghost.

I insured through JustKampers and they supplied a tracker and annual subscription included in the price.

I'm insured with Comfort (Aviva). They didn't require a tracker, not sure if there would be a discount if I had one fitted, but weren't interested unless it was a Thatcham anyway. For my own peace of mind, I bought a cheap one by Streetwize (Halfords, Toolstation) which works with an adequate app. I swapped out the SIM that came with it for a pre-paid one that costs me virtually nothing. I also bought a Stoplock ;)

I'm with Comfort too. Them providing cover was contingent on me having a tracker fitted, but that was due to the value of my camper.

I reckon they all just make it up as they go along. Our van is fairly basic, but it's a '73 plate Autohaus, insured for the purchase value.

Christ, not another one. :(

Mine dont care on my new van even with the other one having been stolen from outside the house and the new one being three times the value.

I use one of these on the dog Tractive - No. 1 GPS Tracker for Cats and Dogs - Worldwide with a global GPS subscription. It is epic, in fact so epic I have a second one in the bus as well. I can share the location with my wife when on a road trip and she can live track me. it was great on my trip to Italy with the dog as I didnt need to check in to let her know I was going to rest or stop etc so she didnt worry and all that.

Sorry, nothing personal, but the "they make it up as they go along" narrative is as prevalent as it false.

Fair enough. Apologies. But for the benefit of the OP, his estimated value when finished won't be too far off ours, and Comfort never even asked me if I had a tracker fitted, or was planning on getting one. The main point though in answer to the OP's question was that unless it's a Thatcham, they won't be interested.

Although the one about 'risk' isn't a universal truth either.

Thanks all for the info.

Handy to know I should have options insurance wise without one and/or can go with a insurance option that provides one in the price if that works out cheapest.

Going to get:
* A gold disklok
* A wheelclamp (likely bulldog euro or centaur)
With the idea that this should be enough to put most thieves off and move them further along the road to an easier target.

I'm fortunate not to generally be using it as my usual day vehicle and it'll largely just be used for holidays and occasion when we need a second vehicle, so I think these won't be too inconvenient to keep on while parked.

Thanks
Dan

If you get the Disklok it's worth paying extra for the carry bag. I keep one handle hooked over the inside armrest on the drivers seat and it makes it simple to stash the lock when removed.

JustKampers last year said I needed to call them and couldn’t just renew, when I rung they said the underwriter now needed a tracker installed or I couldn’t renew, cut a long story short it wasn’t cheaper with the tracker and ended up renewing with the same people (got quotes elsewhere and roughly the same price) without a tracker. There was a 40% uplift in price though so I think it was about justifying the price rise

Just got new insurance with Adrian flux, no tracker and a very reasonable price, ( trackers are relatively easy to negate if you have the right equipment and knowledge, immobiliser is better imo, but if someone is determined, nothing will stop a theft.)

When I spoke to Adrian Flux they insisted on a tracker (that they supplied) or they wouldn’t insure me..

Their quote was miles off anyway so I went elsewhere.

I’m sure these companies have their reasons but it’s difficult to see the logic when you read about people’s experiences
