I've got a set of LEDs coming tomorrow to try in the mains, as i don't like the yellow.

Further to dubber 36's comments above, lighting is what I do, and the higher the colour temperature, the bluer the light output and less actual visual spectrum for the human eye to pick up.
In short, the bluer the light, the less it lights the road in front, so going lower in temperature can only be a good thing.

Certainly don't go above 5000k. Car Rover offer an 8000K kit, ok, but not recommended.

I'm interested to hear the results from dubber36?

I would not recommend HID in main beam, if you have main and dipped stay on at the same time, that's a lot of heat in a plastic lamp casing, would you agree dubber?

Another thing I tried in the mains were Osram 80W cool blue halogens at 6000K.

Waste of time and money, far too blue and more light comes out of an Osram 55W nightbraker.

The reason I wouldn't fit HIDs in main beam would be the slow warm up time. When you switch to main beam, you want/need full power straight away.

With regards to HIDs creating more heat, halogen bulbs get far too hot to touch, so it's not something I'd given much thought to. I'd always considered the airflow from the movement of the vehicle to give sufficient cooling to the headlights.

Yes, good call on the warm up, discharge lamps don't like being flashed in any case.

I'll report back on the LED main option tomorrow.

Looking forward to hearing about the 4300k units.

Yep, halogen runs hotter than HID, so forget I mentioned it, was having a moment... :)

4300K HIDs arrived this morning. Fitted them in no time (I'm getting to be a dab hand at this job) turned them on...WOW. Even in daylight, just WOW against the garage door. Started the van... flicker, flicker, turn off. Turn off the engine, ignition back on, WOW, there we go...start the engine, yes you've guessed it.

There is something overly fussy about our vans. When they had turned themselves off, there was no power going to the headlight plug, so it's not a fault with the HIDs. Even with bulb monitoring turned off, if it senses something is different, it's not happy.

Update:

Just spoken to the suppliers and they say that 55W kits will not work with our vans. The one I should have bought, and that I will be exchanging it for is H7 Terminator 35w HID XENON CONVERSION KIT CANBUS ERROR FREE

Apparently my Novsight canbus add on boxes have arrived so it'll be interesting to see if they stop the flicker on my H4 Novsight "Godzilla Mutilator" LEDs... everything is crossed as the lamps are great in our other car.

Regarding the flicker is it caused by the lamp out detection signal as it's superimposed on top of the normal light output and not a PWM issue with the H4 being pulsed to dim... could just be VW sour grapes?

As
I’ve been reading the last few pages of this thread and I feel that the more I read, the more confused I am!

What I am after is brighter headlights to my stock T6 headlamps, I am not particularly bothered by the fancy indicators, I don’t have access to VCDS to reprogram and I don’t feel confident enough to be removing any bodywork. Could anyone advice what my options are for straight forward swap outs?

thanks,
Ambrose

As Ambrose says above, I too would like to improve my lights on my van. I have 2019 panel van, but from information I have on my van,I cannot determine whether I have H4 or H7 headlights, reflectors or projectors.? Could someone post some picture showing the difference between the H4 and H7 set ups, so at least I get a better idea of what direction to take to improve my “ poor” lighting.

Are they saying that "their" 55w kits won't work with our vans?
I have the Car Rover 55w kit and it works perfectly, no flicker or lamp out warnings.

I have 6000K bulbs and will try 5000K tomorrow to see what improvement. I'm happy enough with the 600oK, but as you say, I think I can get more light out of them.
The bulbs are not from the same manufacturer and are metal based, not plastic, so will report if they are better and compatible with the Car Rover ballasts at the weekend.

Did you get any photos with the 4300K before you removed them??
:)

I guess the particular kit that I bought won't work. They assure me that the 35W Terminator kit will. It has an extra box of gubins, so perhaps that's what makes the difference.

No I didn't get any pictures. I was too pissed off with them to be arsed.

Look forward to this!!

Won't be until Friday at the earliest mate as it's freezing, too dark and I'm an old man with backache, OTOH I could have them in on the Sunday afternoon meet if these bits of kit work.

If they don't work you'll have to put up with the £19.99 Lumen Blaster v. 0.5 which even though I do knock them were brighter than the poor sod in the stock H4 T6 we went past on the A34 last Friday going down to Bournemouth... sadly however, nowhere near as bright as the Volvo XC90s we were slip streaming later.

Sounds good, we can have a bulb off on Sunday! :D
