Type 1, Type 2, Landrover, T6??

Hello Ben,

Recovering Land Rover enthusiast.
Also builder, so my fleet works for a living.
Have been free of LR for a year and still desire another one.

Currently have two lwb T6’s.
Both dsg, t32, 204bhp.
One high roof 2wd, window van. Only had this for a year on 66,000 miles 2017 reg.
One kombi 4motion. Owned just over six years and best van I have owned 55,000 miles 2018

Both excellent towing capabilities.
4motion is more confident option.

I think for your budget you may struggle to get 4motion dsg that’s not going to be a money pit. In my opinion. Good luck with your search
Thanks.

I think I'll aim for a manual 4motion & see where that takes me.

You can get a T28 or 30 up plated to give a GVM of 3150. This is a paperwork exercise with no mods required and costs about £275. What it doesn’t do is increase individual axle capacity though so that would need to be considered if you are near the limit.

Ben Browne,

For your type of business, I would have thought that some sort of AWD capability essential, particularly as your towing trailers off road and negotiating steep a drive way at home. Just wondering why you want to change from a defender which has a much greater towing capacity and other attributes.

If you want a T6 or T5 then 4Motion would be essential and one with a rear differential lock even better. The rear Diff Lock does more than add additional traction. It pre-engages the 4Motion system so the vehicle feel so much more positive off road because there is no pause for activation and so less chance of initial slippage. This may be important to you in that repeated visits to a clients wet and slippery grassland there is less likelihood of turning it into a quagmire. All Terrain Tyres would probably be a good idea. Equipped as such a T5 or T6 would provide excellent traction. Most Defenders only come with a central Differential Lock the axles being open, they do however have a low range for creeping but a T6 or 5 with DSG can be encouraged to drive slower with the brake pedal. DSG equipped vehicles do not normally stall. There are outlets that can put in a lower first gear. I live off-road so my T6 4Motion Caravelle Exec with rear Diff Lock gets used almost every day over Welsh Green lane conditions including sloping wet grass. It does very well off -road only lacking in massive articulation and ramp over capabilities of a defender otherwise it will follow a Defender quite well under axle clearance is also quite good. T6 will take larger tyres plenty of information on these pages.

I am not a mechanic but I believe that a T6 properly looked after ought to provide good service so any used vehicle needs history and a good look at. The Haldex oil needs changing every now and then, mine was filthy dirty at 27,000mls. If no record of it being done the have it changed and cleaned out. I think that VW does not mention it or perhaps expects the oil to last the vehicle life time, it wont! No idea of minium price but Defenders are not cheap either. Find a good VW Independent Workshop for servicing unless your good at that sort of thing.

There is massive information on these pages and some very cleaver and experience master mechanics and electronics people here, they have dazzling knowledge and capabilities. Good luck with your search and decisions.

We had a t5.1 4motion tipper for a few years before COVID lockdown. In hindsight should have kept it. Was a great vehicle and super towing.
At least with manual you can get the 150bhp and avoid potential excessive oil use of the 204bhp.

Thanks very much.

The defender is great but it is 26 years old and although it only has 112k on the clock it is becoming more unreliable and the number one thing I need as a sole trader is reliability - electric windows would be nice too!

Also space - at over 6ft the 110 is pretty cramped and restricts how much kit I can neatly fit in the back.

Also it would be nice to have a second vehicle in the household that we could use on our yearly escape from the holiday season in Cornwall to the relative quiet of the Black Mountains without being deafened by the defender.

As far as towing goes its only a single axle caged 8x4 iforwilliams and I only use it a few times a month and rarely on super sloped fields.

I must say the information I've had today has been great from all members and really has given me a bit more confidence in making the switch from LR to VW.

Before getting our T6, we had a run of 8 Discos ranging from a 1991 200TDI to a D4HSE as the final one. The D4 was/is the best tow vehicle I’ve ever used, the T6 will never compare to the Disco…BUT, it’s still a very competent, confident tow truck with 2000kg on the back. And I can eat & sleep in it. Ours is the 204 DSG 4mot & despite the horror stories, it’s never missed a beat. I wouldn’t have any hesitation in switching from a LR to a 4mot transporter

Looking at the dealer description they’ve got hold of the original order spec. The only change I see though is the wheels as they aren’t 16” more likely 17 or 18 with all terrain tyres which is no bad thing. You’ve got about 800 kg payload, depending on what weight your carrying progress may be slower as it’s the 101 bhp engine but then your coming from a defender so may not be that different

Shutting up ain't what forums are about mate. ;)
Thanks, Bav, I was trying to summarise the below post, from a different thread, but ended up confusing matters it would seem. In my head, bigger T number means bigger load capacity especially when the base vehicle are almost similar starting weights.

I just forgot to add the bit about gross van weight.

Your van is a T6.1 T32. The T6.1 bit means it is a later version of the T6, with a different front end, dash and different electrical systems among other things. The T32 bit is all about it's payload capacity, or load rating as you might hear it called. There are different variants within the T6/T6.1 range, you've got T26, T28, T30, T32. The higher the number, the larger the load rating. Simply put, you can have a max van weight of 2.6 tonnes if it's a T26, up to 3.2 tonnes if it's a T32.

I would appreciate any comments on this please I know its high mileage but the price reflects this. Thank you.

Can’t see the engine output in the ad. Also they are very specific about it not coming with a warranty, I wonder why??

Quick check suggests 150hp 6 speed trend line

The paint looks really flat, particularly on the front, and while the MOT history doesn't look bad it does reflect the possibility of accident damage of some sort.

I would walk on personally, there's no shortage of vans for sale.

Too many miles and specific statement about warranty (or lack of!) would worry me no end. Pass the bargepole please.
