Has anyone converted by adding a high roof and been refused the 'Motor Caravan' body type description?

I ask because that is the type of conversion that I always do.

A mate of mine has had his V5 returned today, Amended to window van rather that motor home, which still has speed restrictions in place.

You'll have to go for an IVA, new chassis number and reregistration as M1 in that case.

Oh, I see what you’re referring to. I referenced the speed issue but nothing wrt wanting to reclassify though....
Now that would be a can of worms! How many of our conversions would pass IVA as they stand now? Never mind VOSA demanding all new conversions go through it!
I suppose that’s to come.

As far as I understand it you are not speed restricted in a Kombi below 2040 as it is a dual purpose vehicle.
You will happily get insurance although it might cost slightly more and it may cost more if you have to enter low emission zones but someone in the south will have to advise on that, we have lots of fresh air here in the Highlands:)

Did it have 4 windows fitted with front slide windows both sides, an awning, a pop top, a bike rack or any other thing a “normal” person would classify as a camper-van / motor caravan?
Just trying to work out DVLA’s interpretations of the rules!!

Well, I have dumped a load of new photos etc on the DVLA just to see what happens. For the price of a stamp, envelope and some ink, photo media
I have had lying around for years, I will take some pleasure in just mithering the socks of them if nothing else. Well it will help keep one of our Welsh bretheren in a job and has my better half is half Welsh it can't be bad.;);)

After the first rejection letter that I had from DVLA, I actually rang them to get some further clarification but came away thinking that I had just had a fruitless conversation with a brick wall. At the end of the call, I asked for details of the DVLA complaints procedure and was assured that I would get the information in the post but it wouldn't make any difference to their attitude. I actually thought that I wouldn't hear any more but, to my surprise, a further (unsigned) letter from them arrived in the mail earlier today along with the promised complaints leaflet. The letter can be seen below but I have deleted personal details (of me and them) to protect the innocent and not so innocent. The whole tone of the letter hints at more than a bit of intransigence and I'm not sure how much making a formal complaint will achieve but am still thinking of having a go. Maybe a better approach would be to write a personal letter to the Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA who would be ultimately responsible - a quick Google search says it's somebody called JULIE LENNARD.

Right there in the second sentence, 'revenue collection' this has nothing to do with safety or the police identification.

My argument is that they are saying its for ID purposes, what a complete load of rubbish. Would it not be better to have Motorhome as the emergency services would at least know theywhere dealing with a vehicle that potentially has a gas bottle on board. This certainly goes deeper and yes, its probably a revenu case.

I imported a Land Cruiser Troopie in 2008 and it cost me £120

That would have been SVA @Loz , which was a lot easier and cheaper. I missed the boat when building my car so had IVA to deal with.

I think the DVLA needs to read These books.

“no copyright infringement is intended”

the VW Camper van has been around since the 1950s yet now they have a bee in their bonnet that they are not campers any more but vans with windows shame on the DVLA trying to get rid off something as iconic as the camper van.
