Petition won't help.

You need to write an open letter to the heads of policy in each organisation and the motorhome press so all parties read the same points at the same time and encourage them to close the gaps in the interpretation and suggest a new category be created.
Well I am game to send it but would also suggest that it come signed by all those with interest. I would also suggest that we would also forward it on to all of our local MPs... and then keep our fingers crossed...

Possible workaround?
Assuming most professional converters install the same type of pop top on a regular basis, say Reimo.
Converter gets a boat builder to knock up a mock high top fibreglass bath tub which will strap / clip / bolt on to the standard Reimo roof insert temporarily for the proof photos.
Supplement with a dummy self adhesive water filling point, dummy TV antenna, some ‘motorhome’ decals and obligatory door step.
After photos pull the ‘bathtub’ off to reuse for the next converted vans photos and fit the pop top roof.

Well that's a waste of time. Most don't even get a reply. Those that do are negative, as your suggestion is not in his game plan.
Well, we could all go to our bedrooms and suck our thumbs... Or we could try and see what happens...

Nice idea DXX but when you eventually get pulled over for something i would think that they would give you a good roasting...

The idea has already been patented by @True Romance a few pages back :D

Can you buy wraps of a detached house? Maybe hook-up a vape machine to come out the top where the chimney is? .... 12 volts obviously

Rather than waste time with bathtubs photo shop do a nice line in windows stickers and high tops ;)

But surely the DVLA et al have just said the majority of such enforcement is going to be on ANPR and that’s why the change has occurred. So unless plod has a picture to go with the number plate data then why would they care what it looks like.

ask me another...

I think its just a waiting game. The whole scene is huge money, I am not sure how much the conversion companies generate in terms of tax and also take in to account money generated in business rates and employment and that's without looking at the vehicle sales/aftersales market and even the booking of camping/touring sites , but i am sure it would be very noticeable if it was to suddenly tail off due to some silly rules made by the DVLA.

I hope my point made some form of sense and that is my morning rant over.

@keypad Can't see anything changing regarding the number of converters? Why would they all shut up shop? Anyone looking a getting VW is probably not going to walk away now just because the log book say "van with windows". The industry will pretty much carry on as normal imo and over time "van with windows" will become the norm. Without having to follow the old rules self conversions can now be a lot easier to complete.

Ok I over exaggerated the point, I don't honestly think everyone would shut up shop, but it may have some impact was my point. I totally agree not having to follow the old rules would make things easier and save money on items you may never actually use and only had to meet the DVLA requirements, I know I never cooked or done the washing up in my T5.

I will look at other threads on here to see how people are now insuring their new classified van with windows aka camper.

Well this thread has been thoroughly illuminating. I don't have a T6 (I have a T25) but this thread came up when googling the issue.

I bought my van a year ago but have only recently noticed it was a "Panel Van" so I applied for a re-classification (in October). It looks like this:

But alas:

Doesn't have the external features? I can't fathom what I'm missing, here, unless I need *all* of the features.

So I emailed them asking for clarification, to which they (promptly, to their credit) said

Would it be possible to email me photographs of the vehicle.

I will then forward this case to our appeal’s team to reconsider the decision to change the body type.

Oh so there is an appeals process, in fact an entire appeals team, despite their letter saying "this decision is final and there is no appeals process". lmao

I await their reply but they're not being so prompt now.

Get some stripes on it
I remember my local Citroen dealer phoning me to tell me that the 'go faster decals' had not been found in my new BX-16 valve during pre-delivery checks. So I could not collect it as previously arranged.

I said, that's good news as I didn't want them anyway.

More recently, for my first conversion to a 'motor caravan', I asked the builder to not add his normal flashy stripes as I did not want them, but it was OK to fit his brand name.

Whilst many here may like bling stripes, some don't.

It has a permanent high top... thought that would be enough really... They have truly messed this up.

Lovely van BTW, love the red and white curtains... :)
