Waterproof / Surf key

I just ordered the VW plastic key and had it cut at the local key cutters. Works perfectly and doesn’t set the alarm off if I lock the van with the plastic key. Maybe try a different key cutter?
Where did you order the plastic key from?

I saw this video on Instagram from Transporter HQ and this seems like an appropriate thread in which to share it:

It's a combination key safe mounted behind their hidden flap -- it fits a standard VW folding key fob in there.

Saw this as well but then saw the price of £250 which whilst understandable for the bespoke nature of the design and likely low volumes is one third of the way to a new stick!

I asked the local VW Heritage van centre here in Bristol for a plastic key to be cut for our 6.1 but the person in the parts department had never heard of one.

Where do we source one?!
Don’t buy the plastic one as they are crap, ask your local key cutter to cut you a blank ( no immobiliser) should cost about £10. I bought the plastic one from eBay for £15 and when the the locksmith tried to cut the plastic it went through. Told the eBay seller and he said said me a picture of the key. I didn’t bother, he already had my address from the first postage. Then he would have key to the van

A decent autolocksmith would know which blank to use for a T6.1, metal blades with plastic heads are readily available that will get you into it.

How does that key work please?

1 - can you lock the door ok? Presumably doors locked but no alarm
2 - when you unlock the door, do you need to put the real key in the ignition sharpish to show the alarm going off?
3 - does central locking operate with it ok or is it just the drivers side door?

Been using a dry bag for the key but would be good to remove the need for that

I have a T6 highline 2019 and if I lock the van with any key at the drivers door then when I unlock it later at the drivers door the alarm goes off immediately, before I open the door!

Is there any way to unlock the van with a key (not remote) without the alarm going off?

Many thanks,

I think it can be changed in an adaptation channel on VCDS

Thanks for the reply, is that something a decent garage should be able to do or would it need to be a dealer?

Anyone with VCDS should be able to do it, if it’s possible with an adaptation & not a figment of my imagination.

VCDS can change it so the alarm goes off with either the turning of the key or waiting til the door is opened but alarm will still set. Try pressing the button on the drivers side pillar next to the seat before locking it manually, then unlock and see if alarm goes off

Thank you both.

I did try "pressing the button on the drivers side pillar next to the seat before locking it manually, then unlock" and the alarm then still sounds imidiatly on turning the key.

I'm happy for the alarm to set, the real issue is that you can't unlock the van manually without it going off.

I've seen some other posts saying it shouldn't go off when unlocking with a manual key or opening the door as long as you put the key in the ignition shortly afterwards. This would be a acceptible solution, but this isn't what it saya in the handbook or what happens.

It makes me wonder where there is a key hole on the drivers door if using it with any key instantly trigers the alarm?

If you used a proper key with a transponder, the alarm wouldn’t go off. The issue is that the van doesn’t see a genuine key.

I have tested unlocking the door manually with a genuine key to rule this out, but the alarm still goes off as soon as I turn it.

Alternative option? Combination key safe that you attach to the outside of the van.
I've got one of those, but unfortunatly they don't work as they can be opened in about 10 seconds. Even if I only surfed where I could see the van I couldn't get out of the water quick enough.

Did you lock it manually first?

Just tried my 2017 Kombi and alarm didn't go off. I would guess then it could be changed on a setting somewhere (beyond my knowledge)

Also personally I would never use the key safe, been lots of cases of cars being stolen with them and because the genuine key was left with the vehicle insurers not paying out.

Thanks a lot for testing this.

I did the same test:
Locked it with the manual key, then unlocked it with the manual key = no alarm.

Then I tested:
Locked it with a manual key, then unlocked it with the manual key 30 min later = alarm sounds as soon as I turn the key.

on your first test, did you wait 30 seconds for it to arm?

No, that was the difference between the two tests, one was a only locked breify and there's no alarm, one was locked for a while and alarm sounds.

As bad as my surfing is, I'm usually out for more than 30 seconds though so it's not much help.
